(May 2, 2020 10:53 AM) Each year, Jackson College recognizes the importance of its employees with annual employee awards. Presented virtually this year, Jackson College congratulates the winner of the 2020 Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Award, Vincent Maltese.
Vincent Maltese spent 20 years as a Marine Engineer where he sailed on U.S. flagged merchant vessels calling on ports all over the world. A graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, he became interested in teaching while helping fellow crewmembers complete a community college mathematics correspondence course, enjoying the interaction with those students. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserves from 1974-1985, first as a midshipman and later as a commissioned officer.
He began teaching at Jackson College in 1999 as an adjunct but left after a year to take a full-time position at Monroe County Community College in 2000, where he later served in several administrative roles. He returned to Jackson College in 2016. He teaches mathematics and a few business courses as part of the Corrections Education Program at the Milan facility. Maltese is active in many professional organizations and community groups, and is a longtime blood donor, donating 94 pints — nearly 12 gallons — to the American Red Cross.
“When I was told that I had won the award I was surprised and humbled. I have met so very many outstanding adjunct faculty members during my time at Jackson College,” he said. “The two things I enjoy most about my job are making a positive difference in the lives of students and working as an integral part of an outstanding faculty, staff and administration.”
He thanks his wife, Joanne, for her for her support, which has been integral in each of his life’s successes.
