Jackson College held its Commencement for the May, 2017 graduating class on May 6th at Potter Center on Central Campus.  The class, consisting of 610 students, was represented by more than 300 students in attendance with family and friends.  An overflow audience watched the ceremonies on closed circuit video in the Baughman Theatre.

The college conferred its first ever bachelor’s degree to  E. Rose Isaacson, Bachelor of Science in Energy Systems Management.

The Bachelor of Science degree in Energy Systems Management was authorized by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools’ Higher Learning Commission in 2014 and Isaacson was the first student to complete the program.   The program is designed to train students in supervisory and management careers in the energy industry.

Jackson College now offers bachelor’s degrees in energy production technology and culinary arts.

Student speaker was Laurie Sexton, who graduated with High Honors with an Associate in Arts degree.

At the graduation ceremony, the 2017 Dr. Ethelene Jones Crockett Distinguished Alumni Award was presented to Dr. Jon M. Lake.  The College  presented the 2017 Jackson College Distinguished Service Award to Bart and Karen Hawley.

Degrees and Certificates were presented by Dr. Dan Phelan, President, Sam Barnes, Board Chairman, Provost Dr. Rebekah Woods, Dean Dr. Todd Butler and Dean Jeremy Free.

Earlier in the week, the Kente celebration was held in Michael Baughman Theatre, Potter Center.  “Kente” is a brilliantly colorful fabric that is woven in Africa and is worn in ceremonies, graduations and other special events. The ceremony is an opportunity to recognize the academic and personal achievements of the graduates, and to encourage them to accept the challenge to continue to strive for excellence in their personal, academic and professional careers. Participating students will received a Kente stole to wear at commencement.  All graduating students who have identified themselves as having a diverse ethnic background were invited to participate.

Student Excellence Awards and the Nursing Pinning Ceremony preceded commencement earlier in the day.
