Jackson College has added men’s and women’s bowling teams for the upcoming collegiate season. The college season will begin in January, and the Jets are hoping to have a good year. The State of Michigan is one of the top bowling states in the country, and the Jackson area is a bowling community in comparison with most others. Jackson College may have additional success thanks to this.

“Our teams are coming together quite nicely. We currently have 7 men and 4 women, but I’m in the process of adding women number 5 as we speak,” said first year Head Coach Corey Daniels. “Our men’s team is farther along than our women’s team but our women’s team has made vast improvements since the beginning of our season in October.”

Corey Daniels is a veteran bowler of over 17 years and is a graduate of Northwest High School where he bowled for four years. He continued his studies at Grand Valley State University for business administration. He has been the coach for Northwest varsity bowling for the past four years. Today he manages Suburban Lanes bowling alley on Ann Arbor Road, owned by his parents, Ron and Cindy Daniels.

Jackson College Athletic Director Heather Bateman had approached Daniels about Suburban Lanes being the host site for the new College bowling program. He became interested in the position through their discussion and applied for the post.

Daniels has resigned as a bowling coach at Northwest High School, where he spent the previous four seasons. “That school, program, and other coaches will always hold a special place in my heart,” said the coach. The schedule for both teams did not match up- meaning that he needed to step down in order to lead Jackson College. He says he has not stepped away from the program however. “I will be in and out of their practices and matches while recruiting and in my free time.”

When asked about who to keep an eye on this season:

Through the first two months of practices I’m very impressed with the progress of Keegan Campbell and Cami Emerson. Keegan has an individual state runner up title to his name at the Division 4 HS Championships last year and comes from a HS powerhouse in Vandercook Lake. He has that clutch personality and has shown over the last two months that he has the opportunity to have a very successful season in leading our team both on and off the lanes. Cami hails from the underrated Columbia Central program where she quietly was able to make the state meet herself. She is the most accurate bowler in our entire program and has progressed on every sport shot we’ve thrown at her. She is as consistent as anyone and I believe she can lead this team and herself to a successful season.

The Jets will recruit locally for the majority of their bowlers. “The talent level here in Jackson is very good, and in the surrounding areas, a 30- to 45-mile radius, there are several champions and team state champions,” said Daniels. The first year collegiate coach thinks the school can be competitive. “With the talent that is around here, I feel we can be competitive our first year.”

The program’s goal for the season is improvement. It’s a cliche- but as a first year program it’s reasonable and recognizable goal. Daniels will be joined on the lanes by assistant coach Steve Sears, former Vandercook Lake Boys Coach. “We have steadily improved week in and week out,” said the first year head coach. “My end goal is ultimately a trip to the National Championships and I will always have that goal, but as long as we compete professionally on the lanes and show improvement and trust in each other, I will be happy with this first season.”

JC will compete in the MCCAA (Michigan Community College Athletic Association) where, starting January 4th, the two teams will compete for 7 straight weeks. Being new to this conference and Jackson being new to the bowling world. The program knows Ancilla College has a tough program as well as Muskegon Community College, but after that there isn’t much to go off of as far as bowling in the MCCAA. January 4th will be the team’s first opportunity to prove themselves to the conference.
