Jackson College Prepares To Celebrate Commencement Saturday

(May 2, 2024 9:19 AM ET) Jackson College will celebrate commencement exercises at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, May 4 in the Harold Sheffer Music Hall, Potter Center.

To provide an opportunity for all family and friends to see their graduates, the College will host two ceremonies this year. In the morning, Health, Business and Computer Technology and Human Services Pathways students will graduate; in the afternoon, Liberal Arts, STEAM and Skilled Trades Pathways students will graduate. Students completing their graduation requirements for fall 2023, spring or summer 2024 are invited to participate in commencement. Jackson College expects about 300 to participate or “walk” in the commencement ceremonies, with many more – over 500 — eligible for graduation.

Commencement ceremonies will include comments from President Dr. Daniel J. Phelan and more, including:

• Recognition of the Distinguished Service Award recipients, Trustee Emeritus Sam Barnes ‘89 (morning ceremony) and Professor Emeritus Martha Petry (afternoon ceremony). Barnes is a Jackson College alumnus who served on the College Board of Trustees for 15 years. Petry taught at Jackson College for more than 30 years and continued to serve the Jackson College Foundation Board of Directors in her retirement.
• Recognition of the Dr. Ethelene Jones Crockett Distinguished Alumni Award recipient (afternoon ceremony), Jackson Mayor Daniel Mahoney ’22. In addition to being Mayor of Jackson, Mahoney has actively served his community for more than a decade, including serving at Jackson College’s African-American Affinity Liaison.
• Comments from graduating class representatives, Tina Covic (morning ceremony) and J’dah R. Washington-Bobb (afternoon ceremony). Covic is a nursing graduate who is already employed and working. Washington-Bobb is completing her Associate in Arts degree and will transfer to a four-year institution in the fall.

Doors will open one hour before each ceremony. Graduates and families are invited to receptions after each ceremony.
