Jackson College President Dr. Dan Phelan has been selected to serve on a United States Department of Education accreditation panel for higher education.

Dr. Phelan is representing two-year public institutions of higher education as a negotiator on the Accreditation and Innovation Committee, part of the U.S. Department of Education’s Negotiated Rule Making process, in Washington, D.C. Both the American Association of Community Colleges and the Association of Community College Trustees recommended Phelan.

As part of the committee, Phelan will provide insight and experience into the process that would ensure the future of the accreditation and provide for the future. It also offers a chance to provide influence to help change the process in ways there were not contemplated a number of years ago when the rules were created, he said. The group is comprised of 30 from all walks of education. From Michigan, only Phelan and Provost Kimberly Rupert of Spring Arbor University were selected. For more information, visit here.

“I hope to ensure that our community colleges nationally are well-represented,” Phelan said.

Phelan has been president/chief executive officer of Jackson College since 2001. Among his numerous involvements, he is the past-chairman of the Board of Directors for the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), serves on the AACC Advocacy Advisory Group (AAG), and AACC’s Commission on Institutional Infrastructure and Transformation. He is an active consultant-evaluator for the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, Higher Learning Commission (HLC) in Chicago, IL.
