(December 18, 2024 8:44 PM ET) Jackson District Library’s Hanover Branch, currently located downtown at 118 W. Main St., closed this past weekend as library staff prepare to move the branch to its new building across the street at 137 W. Main St.

JDL officials closed on the new property for $65,000 last December and have since worked to refurbish the space. The building, formerly Bombshells Beauty Parlor, will expand the library’s footprint by roughly 425-square-feet and create a new multi-functional space to accommodate the growing need for community spaces and access to enhanced library services. JDL currently leases space from the Village of Hanover and operates the branch out of the village office building.

In preparation for the move, library staff have organized a number of activities so local residents can acclimate to the new space and catch a sneak peak of the new building, library officials said.

Earlier, a holiday open house featuring tours of the new location was held, the JDL Bookmobile paid a visit, and today a “book chain” was held. Hanover-Horton School District students passed books from location to location in a “fire drill” style line.

JDL officials expect to open the new location to the public sometime in early 2025.

“Hanover and the surrounding area has a long history of supporting and utilizing the Jackson District Library,” JDL Board President Stephen Rajzer said, “and JDL has a long history of improving and updating our library facilities across the county. This is the most recent in a growing list of projects that expand access and improve JDL locations.”

In 2024, JDL finished a project to replace nearly all the aging windows at the historic Carnegie Library in downtown Jackson and most recently finished a refresh of the Henrietta Branch located on Bunkerhill Road in Pleasant Lake.

“We made a promise to Jackson County residents that we’d utilize their tax dollars to refresh our 13 library branches throughout Jackson County and we want to follow through on that promise after residents voted overwhelmingly in favor of our operating millage this November,” Rajzer said.
