(July 10, 2024 9:55 PM ET) Emma Hubbard, a 2024 graduate of Grass Lake High School, is the first recipient of the Jackson Golf Hall of Fame college scholarship.

The Hall of Fame committee established the scholarship this spring to help Jackson County students pursue a college education. The initial scholarship award is $750. To be eligible, students must be graduating seniors with a minimum 3.0 grade-point average who have played high school golf. Awards are based on golf accomplishments, future plans, and a short essay on how golf has impacted the student’s life.

Hubbard, who graduated with a 3.8 GPA, plans to attend Michigan State University.

Hubbard played four seasons on the Grass Lake girls golf team after starting to play the game just before she started high school. In her scholarship essay, Hubbard said that even though she was hesitant at first, the decision to try golf has proven to be a good one.

“Competing over the past four years has developed my discipline, leadership skills, and patience,” she said. “It’s no secret that golf can bring out your frustrated side, but it can also form you into the most encouraging and passionate version of yourself. Golf has gifted me with a hobby and community that I can nurture for the rest of my life. I owe meeting some of the best high school friends and mentors to the sport of golf.”

Andrea Clark, her golf coach at Grass Lake, said that spirit of the game distinguished Hubbard.

“Emma is a very kind and encouraging person,” Clark said. “She was always willing to help any player, regardless of which team they were playing for.”

Hubbard’s highlights at Grass Lake included playing on a Cascades Conference championship team as a junior and being named team captain.
