Doug Hanson, who has taught thousands of golfers how to play and to improve their game, is this year’s inductee into the Jackson Golf Hall of Fame.
Hanson became the 71st member of the Hall of Fame when he was inducted in ceremonies today at Sharp Park Golf Course.
Hanson has been a PGA professional for 44 years, the last 30 of them in Jackson, where he has provided instruction to golfers ranging from PGA Tour players to those just beginning the game. He has been especially instrumental in helping junior golfers. He has been a teaching pro at Lakeland Hills Golf Course, Bobick’s Golf, and most recently at Cascades Golf Course, where he can be found most evenings giving lessons. Previously, he was the head professional at Mt. Pleasant Country Club and Duck Lake Country Club and was an assistant pro at Arbor Hills Country Club.
An enthusiastic promoter of golf and golfers in Jackson, Hanson also has hosted a golf radio show and provided written instruction in the Jackson Citizen Patriot.
In nominating Hanson, fellow Jackson Golf Hall of Fame member Dave Kendall said Hanson “is a friend and resource to the most experienced tournament players in the Jackson area, the area PGA professionals, and all those who love to play the game.“
Elaine Crosby, Chairperson of the Jackson Golf Hall of Fame Committee said of Hanson “The committee is thrilled to finally acknowledge the contributions that Doug has made to golf in Jackson. The Hall of Fame is a very elite group of men and women who have either been tremendous players or have contributed to the game in various ways. Doug Hanson is certainly deserving of this recognition.”
His highlights as a player include top-three finishes in the Michigan PGA Senior Pro-Am, the Michigan PGA Senior Championship, the Michigan PGA Pro-Am and the Michigan PGA Pro Pro.
