Jackson YMCA CEO Shawn Tello announced today the Jackson YMCA will close through April 5.

In a statement to the community, Tello said:

“Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed Executive Order 2020-9. Under this order, effective today at 3 pm, many places of public accommodation will be closed, including gymnasiums, fitness centers, recreation centers, indoor sports facilities, indoor exercise facilities and more.

“Order restrictions are in place through March 30; we have made the difficult decision to remain closed through April 5, which aligns with the school calendar, our programs and information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

“We continue to look for ways to serve the community during these uncertain times. We will remain a food distribution site for Jackson Public Schools, Monday through Friday, noon to 1 p.m., through April 3. In addition, we’re exploring how we can serve as a collection and distribution site for personal hygiene, household cleaning and infant care items; we will provide information as soon as possible.

“As we navigate this unprecedented challenge, we want to assure all members we understand your financial concerns. We will work with you to ensure fee-based classes or programs are honored through make-ups or credits; in addition, we will reduce membership draft fees by 50 percent in April.

“We are in unchartered waters, and our team is trying to be as proactive as possible in this difficult situation. I ask you to pray for our members and program participants who rely on the YMCA for socialization, health and well-being and our staff and their families.

“We’ll continue to connect with you via our social media, website and app. In addition, staff members will be available to answer questions by phone at 517.782.0537 from 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday. We are here for you – and we will get through this together.”
