John Griffin announced today he is seeking the Republican nomination for the 64th Michigan State House District.  The seat is currently held by Earl Poleski, who will be completing his third and final term in the Michigan House later this year.

John Griffin is the brother of Martin J. Griffin who represented the district from 2007 to 2011.  Martin was also Mayor of Jackson for 11 years.  John’s father, Michael J. Griffin, represented the 64th district for 26 years (1973-1999).  According to a press release, both are supporting John’s candidacy.

John Griffin retired this year after a 32-year career in government and public affairs, most recently as a lobbyist and spokesperson for the American Petroleum Institute.  He also represented the Michigan Catholic Conference and the Michigan Hospital Association.  In his hometown, John served two terms on the Jackson City Commission (1989-1993) and currently is a GOP precinct delegate for his precinct in Summit Township, where he resides.

John Griffin is a graduate of Lumen Christi High School and Michigan State University.  John and his wife Barbara are the parents of 3 children and one grandchild.

In announcing the candidacy, John Griffin says he has been a strong conservative for nearly 30 years.  He believes he has the ability to bring parties together on key public policy initiatives.  He says he believes in individual rights, free markets and private property rights.

The 64th District includes all of the City of Jackson and the townships of Summit, Napoleon, Spring Arbor, Concord, Pulaski, Parma, Sandstone and Horton in Jackson County.

Two other Republicans, businessman Phil Tripp and County Commissioner Julie Alexander previously entered the race.  The Republican primary will be held on August 2.  The filing deadline for candidates is April 19.
