Three of Four Girls’ Basketball Teams Advance to Regional Finals

(March 11, 2024 9:33 PM ET) Three of four district basketball winning teams from Jackson County advanced to their respective regional finals Monday night.

Columbia Central and Concord defeated 22-2 teams in their regional semifinals Monday.

Columbia Central defeated former conference foes Blissfield 49-44 in the Division 3 regional at Onsted High School.

It was a team effort for the Golden Eagles as Hailey Freshcorn scored 15 points and four players scored as least six points for CCHS. 

The Golden Eagles (16-8) face Ypsilanti Prep (21-4) in the regional final at Onsted High School Wednesday at 7 p.m. 

Concord defeated a 22-2 squad from Colon 39-36 in the Division 4 regional at Mendon. The Yellowjackets held Colon to 12 points in the first half and made enough free throws in the final four minutes to earn the victory. Colon had defeated Concord (20-5) by double digits earlier in the season.

“We were just more mentally focused and took pride in our defense tonight,” Concord Coach ArShawn Parker said.  

Cieara Barrett and Grace Thorrez each scored 13 points to lead Concord. The guards for Concord were successful in playing keep away from Colon the final four minutes of the game. 

Concord faces Mendon (22-3) at Mendon High School Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the regional final.

Michigan Center defeated Jonesville 53-40 in the Division 3 regional at Leslie High School. The Cardinals are now 22-3 for the season following the victory. 

New Lothrop defeated Leslie 41-38 in the other regional semifinal pitting MCHS against New Lothrop in the regional final Wednesday at 7 p.m. 

McKynley Gaddy scored 15 points to lead Michigan Center in the win. Samantha Wynn added 11 points and seven rebounds and Hailey Mees scored 10 points and recorded four steals for MCHS. 

Tecumseh defeated Western 61-48 in the Division 2 regional at Charlotte High School. Western finishes the season with a 15-10 overall record.

Baseball

Taylor 13, Spring Arbor 1: Taylor scored six times in the fourth inning breaking open a close contest. Aiden Brunin had all three hits for SAU. 

Taylor 12, Spring Arbor 2: Three pitchers combined for a no-hitter for Taylor University. The Cougars are 6-12 overall for the season.
