(January 7, 2022 10:49 AM) Northwest High School basketball player Ashley Weller said she was better at the game than her brother at one point.
Then Ian grew to 6 feet, 7 inches tall.
But the Mounties are happy with the play of Ashley on the girls’ team as she is the leading scorer and a solid contributor despite being just a sophomore. The Mounties are probably hoping for a growth spurt from Weller – who is 5-9.
“I used to be better than him, but he got a lot bigger,” Weller said of her rivalry with her brother on the basketball court.
The Mounties are off to a 4-2 start on the season with their only losses to Haslett (6-1) and Western (6-0). Weller scored 20 points in a win over Eaton Rapids, scoring 14 in the first half.
“Everyone on the team gets along and we always look for the open person,” Weller said. “The game against Western was rough, but we will do better next time.”
The Mounties will face Western at least one more time in the Interstate-8 Conference and possibly in the Division 1 girls’ basketball district at Mason.
Weller has been playing AAU basketball since fourth grade and currently plays for an AAU team in west Michigan. She started as a freshman for Northwest a year ago.
“I have been more aggressive and more confident on the court this season,” Weller said.
She is averaging 15 points per game for the Mounties this season.
