Week Six Football Provides Few Surprises

Three teams remain undefeated and are probably looking at playoff points in local high school football

Leslie, Springport, and Hanover-Horton remain undefeated in football with wins Friday.

Saturday was also a bid day in cross country as area teams participated in the annual Portage Invitational. There were a lot of teams competing and it feels like the state meet – now less than one month away.

Here are results from Friday and Saturday for local high school and college teams.

Football

Jonesville 32, Columbia Central 12: John Milks was the star for Jonesville with 32 carries for 244 yards and two scores. Skyler Cooper ran for 49 yards and two touchdowns and Carson Playford scored a touchdown for Jonesville.          Playford finished with seven tackles and a sack defensively for Jonesville. Columbia Central is now 2-4 and the loss stops its two-game winning streak. CCHS hosts Homer next Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff while Jonesville evens its record at 3-3 and travels to Vandercook Lake next week.

 Pittsford 50, Concord 12: Pittsford jumped out to a 28-0 lead at Concord on homecoming night. Jordan Medellin scored on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Gavin Riske and Nathan Fritz added a 31-yard score from Riske. The Concord quarterback finished with 211 passing yards and 39 rushing yards while Medellin finished with 93 receiving yards. Trenton Frazer tallied seven tackles to lead Concord. The Yellowjackets travel to Holgate (Ohio) on Saturday for a 6 p.m. non-conference kickoff.

Manchester 72, East Jackson 19: The scorekeeper may have been the busiest on the night as the teams combined for 91 points. Manchester finished with 264 rushing yards as Jayden Johnson ran for 96 yards and two scores and Walter Ahrens added 62 rushing yards and two scores. Bubba Duffing and Jack Walz also scored for the Flying Dutchmen. Phoenix Hulswitt and Drake Neff also scored on passing touchdowns for Manchester. EJHS sophomore quarterback Kayson Lovett was 4-for-9 passing with one touchdown. Amaree Padgett caught one touchdown pass and ran for another for East Jackson. K.J. Olivier also caught a touchdown pass for the Trojans. Landon Hendricks and Alex Lewin both finished with eight tackles for East Jackson. Manchester is 5-1 and travels to Grass Lake next Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff. East Jackson is winless on the season and hosts undefeated Leslie next Friday in a Cascades Conference contest.

Bubba Duffing, Manchester

Hanover-Horton 51, Vandercook Lake 0: The Comets remained undefeated on the season rushing for 306 yards on the night. Kolin Griffiths finished with 104 yards and one score. Rushing touchdowns were scored by A.J. Fielder, J.J. Russ, Luke Soper, Austyn Hocter, and Jack Wooster. Jaxon Johnson also caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from Soper. Adam Ley finished with eight tackles including three for losses to lead Hanover-Horton. Vandercook Lake is now 1-5 overall and will host Jonesville next Friday. Hanover-Horton travels to Addison Friday at 7 p.m. for a Cascades Conference Western Division battle.

 Michigan Center 33, Grass Lake 28: Both teams are now 3-3 following the Cascades Conference game. Michigan Center scored twice in the final quarter to pull out the victory. Brayden Lape finished with 345 passing yards for Grass Lake. Luke Guthrie ran for 61 yards and one score and Bryant Cook caught seven passes for 103 yards. Carmyne Beltran and Jacob Collins scored receiving touchdowns for GLHS. Michigan Center travels to Napoleon next Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff while Grass Lake hosts Manchester.

 Addison 60, Homer 22: Addison High School snapped a two-game losing streak scoring early and often against Homer. Caleb Potts finished with 212 rushing yards and a pair of scores and Mikey Trumble added 97 rushing yards and three touchdowns for Addison. The Panthers are now 3-3 overall while Homer is 1-5. Addison hosts 6-0 Hanover-Horton Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff while Homer travels to Columbia Central.

Adrian 17, Jackson 14: Jackson High School led 14-7 but gave up a safety late in the game and Adrian converted with a score on the ensuing drive. The Vikings are now 4-2 overall for the season. Jackson will host Chelsea Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

Lumen Christi 63, Toledo St. Francis 35: Again, the scoreboard operator took a beating as the two teams combined for nearly 100 points on homecoming night at LCCHS. Kadale Williams finished with 303 rushing yards and four touchdowns for Lumen Christi. Timmy Crowley rushed for one touchdown and threw for another with 126 passing yards. Kash Kalahar was his favorite target with five catches for 117 yards and one score. Defensively, Amarion Clay scored on a pick-six, Isaac Rehberg finished with eight stops, and Paul Sattler added six tackles and a fumble recovery for Lumen Christi (5-1). Lumen Christi earns another Catholic High School League title with the home victory. The Titans host Traverse City St. Francis Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

Kadale Williams, Lumen Christi

Leslie 36, Napoleon 28: Leslie High School improved to 6-0 with the Cascades Conference win over Napoleon. Joel Cranmore finished with 210 passing yards for Leslie with three touchdowns. Jayden Colby was his favorite target with six catches for 129 yards and two scores and Braydin Johnson added three catches and one touchdown. Jackson Fossitt finished with eight tackles and Colby and Justin Hofbauer added seven tackles apiece for the Blackhawks. Napoleon is now 3-3 on the season with the loss. The Pirates will host Michigan Center next week while Leslie travels to East Jackson for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Friday.

Springport 28, Reading 24: The magical season continues for Springport as the Spartans scored late for a win in Big Eight Conference play. Jake Kregel scored on a long pass with less than two minutes remaining in the contest with Springport trailing by two points. Springport hosts Union City next Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

 Harper Creek 35, Western 13: Reed Myers finished with 172 passing yards and one touchdown pass. Jayden Willis ran for 63 yards and one score and D.J. VanRiper added eight catches for 104 yards and one touchdown for Western. Cole Archer finished with 12 tackles and Luke Bergkoetter added eight stops for the Panthers. Western (4-2) travels to Northwest Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

Stockbridge 28, Quincy 7: Stockbridge earned its first win of the season with a Big Eight Conference win over Quincy. Brandon Hamlett scored on touchdown passes from Zac Rogozinski of 37 and 15 yards. Rogozinski also threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Brock Rochow and the senior quarterback added a 35-yard touchdown run. Domenic Ciminelli finished with seven tackles for Stockbridge and Rochow tallied three interceptions for the Panthers. Stockbridge travels to Sand Creek Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff.    

Dundee 26, Hillsdale 6: Jace Lennox finished with 159 rushing yards for Hillsdale and one touchdown in the Lenawee County Athletic Association loss. Hillsdale (0-6) hosts Clinton in conference play Friday at 7 p.m.

 October 5 Sporting Events

Football

Northwest 35, Berkley 12: Gabe Christner finished with 52 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns, and one passing score for the Mounties. Jack Beebe ran for 59 yards and one score and Jeff Miller added 41 rushing yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Tyler Derby finished with nine tackles and Jack Edwards added seven stops for Northwest (2-4). The Mounties will host Western in a rivalry contest next Friday at 7 p.m.

Volleyball

Concord at Morenci Invitational: Concord High School defeated Onsted, Morenci, and Addison at the event. Iyla Weeks finished with 39 kills, Annie Saenz added 22 kills, and Bradie Lehman finished with 68 assists for Concord. The Yellowjackets are now 16-6-1 overall for the season.

Lumen Christi at Leslie Quad: The Titans defeated Lansing Christian and Leslie but lost to Olivet in the quad meet.

Napoleon at Mt. Morris Invitational: Napoleon lost 30-28 and 25-22 in the fourth round of the tournament to Saginaw Swan Valley.

Boys Cross Country

Hudson Invitational: Columbia Central High School finished fourth at Hudson with 129 points. Wyatt Vowell finished 14th overall for CCHS with a time of 17:36. Jackson Prep was eighth in the lower division race. Diego BoCole was 10th with a time of 17:57 and Dallas Swaenepoel of Vandercook Lake finished 20th in 18:41. Olivet Invitational: Northwest finished seventh and Springport eighth at the Olivet Invitational. Silas Shepherd was fifth overall in 17:45 for Northwest and Aidan Bradley was 17th overall in 18:28. For more information go to www.athletic.net/CrossCountry/meet/237158/info.

Portage Invitational: Lumen Christi won the boys’ Division 3 race with 89 points, Hanover-Horton was fifth scoring 208, and Grass Lake was 21st. Isaiah Dinverno finished third individually (15:51) for the Titans, Landen Boulis of Hanover-Horton placed seventh (16:05), Lumen Christi runner Leo Swager was right behind him (16:15), and Cooper Flick of Hanover-Horton was 10th (16:22). Western finished 18th as a team in the boys’ D-2 race as Edison Lopeman finished third overall (15:29) and Ryan Good placed 45th (16:41). Girls Cross Country

Hudson Invitational: Gabby Gaydosh of Columbia Central finished 33rd in the upper division race (23:16) and Priya Mericle of East Jackson was 27th in the lower division race (23:07). For more information on the Hudson Invitational, go to www.athletic.net/CrossCountry/meet/236953/info.

Olivet Invitational: Chloe Khon of Northwest High School was fourth overall in 20:46. For more information go to www.athletic.net/CrossCountry/meet/237158/info.

Portage Invitational: Lumen Christi placed fifth in the girls’ D-3 race with 237 points, Grass Lake finished 12th (380), and Hanover-Horton was 20th with 527 points. Maisey Toteff of Hanover-Horton finished 21st individually (19:47), Macy Fazekas of Lumen Christi was 31st (20:28), and Adalyn Jarchow of Grass Lake placed 34th (20:32). Boys Soccer

Columbia Central 1, Tecumseh 1: The Golden Eagles tied Tecumseh on the road Saturday.

Michigan Center 6, Maple Valley 0: The Cardinals celebrated its last regular-season game with a big win. Spencer Berkeypile finished with two goals and two assists, and Brady Howard, Tobin Reimers, Hector Ramirez, and Kaden Stiles each added goals for MCHS. Henry Wright earned the shutout in goal with five saves for the Cardinals.

Men’s Soccer

Spring Arbor 2, Huntington 0: Josh Madery and Sahel Yessen scored for Spring Arbor.

Women’s Soccer

Spring Arbor 7, Huntington 1: Lauren Marshall, Regan Ramirez, and Jocelyn Hendricks each scored a pair of goals for the Cougars.
