(January 30, 2020 4:33 PM) The top brass at the Jackson Kiwanis Club were ready to mark zero for their fundraising efforts in regards to the annual Chili Golf Charity Classic due to COVID-19 restrictions.
That was before a group said they would still play – despite the restrictions.
Nearly 70 golfers participated in the 35th annual Chili Golf Charity Classic on Saturday at Hankerd Hills Golf Course.
The tournament had to limit the food aspect of the tournament and gathering as a group due to the restrictions.
Funds raised from the tournament will help the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Jackson Y-Center, the shoes and boots program, and other local programs.
“We didn’t expect anything out of the tournament,” Jackson Kiwanis past President Mike Zuchowski said. “We received a $3,000 donation from Walmart.”
More than 50 local businesses and individuals helped make the tournament a reality with donations.
Golfers played nine holes at Hankerd with a larger than normal golf balls, two clubs, with holes about 100 yards long.
A good drive in the 28-degree weather was about 50 yards.
Once golfers reached the “greens,” a two-putt was conceded for hitting the golf ball inside the outer circle and a one-putt by hitting the golf ball inside the inner circle.
Zuchowski said the organization – with approximately 73 members – raises money through events such as its American Flags Program, the golf tournament, and newspaper sales.
Bob Johnson is the current president of the organization in Jackson.
