(October 16, 2022 8:00 AM) About the only thing that Jackson Public School athlete Sydney Langley doesn’t do is sell the popcorn at swim meets.
But she could probably do a great job at it.
Langley is active in swimming, soccer, band, and senior advisory, and maintains a grade point average of 3.8 on a 4.0 scale.
She is best known as a soccer player at Jackson.
Last year she scored 16 goals in 14 games for the Vikings.
“I play soccer year round … which is tough but I love the sports,” Langley said. “We have lot of good underclassmen coming up this season.”
The Vikings were 6-6-1 during the regular season a year ago.
Langley would like to play club soccer at Michigan State next year.
“They have a really good club team and I would like to continue to play soccer,” Langley said.
The senior would like to study to be an athletic trainer.
“I like being around sports and being a trailer would allow me to be in sports forever,” Langley said.
She has a 3.8 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
Langley has been swimming since sixth grade and enjoys her teammates.
“I like the social aspect of swimming and making friends on the team,” Langley said. “The breaststroke is my favorite stroke.”
Langley recently qualified for the MISCA event in the 100-yard breaststroke. The event is like a state meet in that some of the best 50 swimmers in a particular event are invited.
Langley finished 41st with a time of 1 minute, 13.75 seconds.
“I am not really good at kicking, but I learned the breaststroke in sixth grade and it is my favorite race,” Langley said. “It is tough (to be in really good competitions), but have to believe in yourself.”
Langley has enjoyed the athletes she has met through sports.
“Sports teaches you how to work with everyone,” Langley said. “There is more of a collective teamwork in athletics.”
She is also in symphony and marching band, senior advisory, and participated in student government.
She has enjoyed her time at Jackson High School and loves the new facilities.
“The pool is beautiful,” Langley said. “I love the big windows and the natural light that comes in during practice.
“It is really peaceful after practice.”
