Local musician Steve Berkemeier was supposed to play a couple of musical sets at Veritas Jackson on Saturday night.

That was before the COVID-19 pandemic closed down the upscale restaurant and a number of other entertainment venues in Jackson.

But the longtime musician still played a 45-minute set – this time on Facebook Live through his Steve Berkemeier music page.

It is the fourth such performance by Berkemeier who misses the feel playing live.

A number of other Jackson area performers will provide entertainment on Monday from 7 to 10 p.m. livestreamed at the Blues at the Bohm Facebook page. Entertainments include Chris Canas, Patty PerShayla, Kristen Black, Loren Johnson, Mike “Albion Slim” Crupi, and Kevin Nichols. The event is scheduled to be a telethon/fundraiser according to a poster for the Albion theater.

Berkemeier said the Facebook mini concerts are a way to keep in touch with the people normally at his shows.

“It is a great way to keep in touch with those folks,” Berkemeier said. “Everyone is looking for something to do.”

He originally thought of doing two shows a week. But when the pandemic was extended, Berkemeier has stuck to once a week.

“It has really brought a new dimension to my music,” Berkemeier said. “It has expanded my audience as people are sharing (his music).”

The longtime performer hopes things turn around for the local venues and those who perform. He performs a mix of classic country, classic rock, and his own music.

“This is devastating for bands and artists who rely on this (for their only source of income),” Berkemeier said. “I am hoping and praying that local businesses come through this okay.

“Most small businesses don’t plan on being off for a couple of months.”

Berkemeier works in Lansing as an analyst for the Michigan Secretary of State. He looks forward to getting back to his office and “the new normal.”

“We are all going to have a renewed appreciation for going out to ball games, movies, or just seeing friends when this is over,” Berkemeier said. “I have been fortunate to perform music in front of audiences all these years.”

He plans to continue the concerts – normally on the weekends – through his Facebook page.
