Maddalena Shoots 64 to Win City Senior Golf Championship

(July 25, 2021 2:26 PM) Jackson golfer Steve Maddalena has enjoyed a pretty good week on the golf course.

He won the Jackson County Open last Sunday at Cascades Golf Course and the Joe Fiero City Senior Championship this Sunday at Sharp Park Golf Course.

But the top golfer would probably trade in both championships for a couple less strokes on Monday at the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship qualifying tournament.

On Sunday Maddalena shot a 64 to win by nine strokes at the Fiero City Senior Championship. He birdied five holes on the front nine to pull ahead. Maddalena started the day two strokes behind Pete Walz heading into day two of the tournament.

He finished the tournament at 9 under par with a score of 133.

“I wanted to get even (with Walz) as quickly as I could,” Maddalena said. “With the course being as soft as it was – the ball stayed where you hit it – and that played right into my hand.”

Walz and Greg Zeller tied for second at 142, Jim Coutu and Todd Marston tied for fourth at 143, and Tim Pickering, Bob Varner, and Paul Varner shot 144 to tie for sixth. Mike Raymond was ninth at 145.

Bill Scheele won the first flight with a total of 147, Harold West was second at 149, and Tom Tarasiewicz earned third place shooting 152.

Maddalena – who holds the course record at Sharp Park with a 61- missed qualifying for the U.S. Senior Amateur Open by one stroke at Oakland Hills Country Club on Monday.

He shot a 72 with a pair of bogeys on two par 3 holes on the back nine.

The course has hosted the U.S. Open and Ryder Cup Matches in the past.

“I only had one birdie, but missed some putts that were makeable,” Maddalena said. “I hit a sprinkler head on one of the par threes and it bounced over the green.

“Maybe next year.”
