(February 8, 2025 8:00 AM ET) Sitting out from basketball for two years could be discouraging for some student-athletes.

Jackson College sophomore basketball player Michelle McGee found it inspirational … literally.

The point guard said during that time drew “her closer to religion.”

“During that time I read the Bible and other religious books,” McGee said. “It brings me confidence and patience.

“It is my key to everything in life.”

McKee is making up for lost time. After tearing her ACL – for a second time – she sat out her senior season at Wyoming High School and redshirted for one year at Jackson College.

But the time on the pine did not go unrewarded.

“Watching the action gave me a different look at the game,” McGee said. “As a point guard it taught me how to control and pace the game.

“College basketball is such a different pace.”

As a “freshman” she averaged nearly 10 points, five rebounds, and three steals. She was a third-team all-conference player for the Jets.

This year she has been called upon to provide more scoring after 20-plus points-per-game guard Kaylona Butler went out with an injury.

“Coach look to me to score more,” McGee said. “I just took that attitude that it was up to me.”

That seams to be paying off for the Jets as McGee is averaging 16 points, six rebounds, and four steals.

She recently scored 29 points, pulled down 10 rebounds, and created five steals in a win over Schoolcraft College.

The Jets are looking to again have a chance to compete at the National Junior College Athletic Association national tournament. Jackson won the state tournament last year and went to the nationals for the first time since 1978.

“That was a fun experience,” McGee said. “Besides the tournament we saw a lot off the court too.

“We have just scratched the surface on how good we can be.”

McGee has a couple of options in the near future. She has applied at Jackson College’s ultrasound program or she can continue her basketball career at another college.

She has talked to a “couple of colleges” but said it is a 50-50 proposition at this point.

“I have enjoyed my time at Jackson College and recommend it to everyone,” McGee said. “The coaches make it a family environment and take care of us.”

McGee should know about having numerous “family members” as she is one of 10 children in her family.

“That makes you so family oriented.”
