(July 9, 2020 8:37 PM) Michigan Theatre of Jackson social media creator Steven Tucker kept getting the same question and reactions on Facebook.
When is the theatre going to be open … we want popcorn.
Steven came up with the idea to bring the popcorn to the masses. Steven, his father Steve, and brother, Brian, spent 90 minutes handing out popcorn in front of the Theatre on Thursday from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
The trio will do it again Friday night – at the same time – with entertainment at 124 N. Mechanic St., Jackson.
“It is a great way to give back to people who have donated to the theatre,” Steven said. “It was something for our community.”
The Theatre recently raised more than $10,000 through patronicity.com and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. The money was raised in only 23 hours.
“People have been so generous to our Theatre,” Steve said.
The Theatre was closed on March 13 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Michigan Theatre has served Jackson for more than 90 years and has averaged approximately 300 events in the past two years.
Steven suggested the idea of handing out popcorn earlier in the pandemic, but Steve – the executive director – kept believing the Theatre would be open “soon.” He finally relented.
A number of patrons donated to the Theatre through the popcorn event.
Steve said the Theatre expects to have a new digital marquee within the next two weeks.
“It is delivered to Fritz Signs yesterday (Wednesday),” Steve said. “We plan to use it for more advertising.”
Steve said the digital marquee – which can be changed from a laptop computer – will be used for personal advertising such as birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, and others.
The Theatre planned to have an unveiling earlier in the year, but was postponed due to the pandemic.
Steve said the Theatre will continue to hand out popcorn on Thursdays and Fridays from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
