(August 20, 2021 12:41 PM)  Las Vegas bowler Ron Mohr said he spent 25 years as an air traffic controller.

The job helped him to be able to make “rapid decision … while focusing on what is important.”

That came in handy on Thursday as he won the PBA 60 Dick Weber Classic bowling tournament at JAX 60 in Jackson.

Mohr won the title match over John Kirker 207-162. He won $7,500 for first place while Kirker took home $4,200.

Bowler had trouble on lane 55 throughout the stepladder tournament.

“You knew that lane 56 was going to hook every time,” Mohr said. “Lane 55 kept changing with each shot.”

Mohr – the No. 1 seed heading into the stepladder portion of the tournament – said he kept his eye on the lane conditions.

“I went with the good news, bad new ball in the final,” Mohr said. “I noticed in practice that the heads were really burned up so I couldn’t throw the ball that I wanted to throw.”

It paid off for Mohr who bowled a steady game with two strikes to start the contest.

Kirker also had two strikes to start the championship match, but three opens in the middle frames spelled doom for him.

Mohr said he stayed strong throughout the tournament due to his physical conditioning. He performs 600 sit ups four days per week, approximately 150-200 pushups daily, and cardio on the other three days.

“I keep a log of all the pushups from 1999 to today,” Mohr said. “I’ve done approximately 2.4 million sit ups and 1.3 million pushups since then.”

Mohr averaged 245 pins per match throughout the tournament.

Kirker battled his way through three matches to reach the finals. He defeated Todd Kjell 225-166 in the opening match as both bowlers had problems figuring out lane 55.

A pair of 258 games dispatched Walter Ray Williams and Robert Brown in matches two and three of the stepladder finals.

Kirker ran out of strikes in the championship match against Mohr.

Mohr won his first PBA 50 tournament at JAX 60 – then Airport Lanes – in 2009.
