(8-9-2024, 12:00PM): Stafford Newsome is only entering his third season as the head coach of the Mounties, but he and the team can already make history in such a short time.
“He’s building something great. He teaches the game and how to be a great man after football” said the players of Newsome. If the Mounties finish with a winning record, it would be the first time they finish with three straight winning seasons since 1976.
Northwest comes into the season already on back-to-back winning records for the first time since 2008, and they look to build on the success and compete in the postseason.
Key returnees for the Mounties include junior Gabe Christner (QB), seniors Nathan Latoszewski (RB), Thomas Dodson (OL/DL), Evan Echols (OL/DL), and Tyler Derby (LB/HB).
Other returnees include sophomores Jack Beebe (LB/FB) and Peyton Hughey (OL/DL).
Newcomers expected to make an impact for Northwest include seniors Aiden Tyron (WR), Jalen Jordan (WR/S), Cam Parker (WR/DB), Will Frazier (TE/LB), and junior Jack Edwards (HB/LB).
Quarterback Gabe Christner will rely heavily on the lineman up front in 2024, he scored nine touchdowns in 2023.
Northwest has also made a couple changes on the coaching staff heading into this season Matt Rohde joining the staff. Rohde is a former head coach from Springport High School.
“We want to raise the standard. We’ve had two back-to-back winning seasons at 5-4, first time since 2008! We want to build on that” said Coach Newsome.
