(September 30, 2020 11:15 AM) Jackson Downtown Development Authority Executive Director Cory Mays announced this morning there will be no Downtown Jackson Christmas Parade this year. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the recent extension of the state of emergency order by Governor Whitmer, the Downtown Jackson Christmas Parade committee has made the tough but prudent decision to postpone the 30th annual Christmas Parade until Friday, November 19th, 2021.
The Parade, a volunteer-led effort that is the official launch of the annual Holiday season, will return in 2021. Organizers promise the 2021 edition, the 30th, will be “bigger and better than ever before”. The committee, led for decades by Ed Hatfield, says safety is their number one priority.
The Parade has grown in size and attendance in recent years with the revitalization of Downtown Jackson. The Parade features floats, clowns, costumed characters, marching bands and more.
Tree lighting ceremonies at Horace Blackman Park and at One Energy Plaza follow the conclusion of the parade. Santa Claus rides his sleigh as the last float and visits with children at the Michigan Theatre where refreshments and a Christmas movie are presented.
Community organizations are working to create safe celebrations for fall and winter holidays. Today, Jackson County Parks announced Halloween plans for a drive-thru trick or treat experience and a Halloween-themed drive in movie.
