Osterberg, Gumper Looking for More Success at State Track Finals

(May 19, 2024 7:30 AM ET) Lumen Christi Catholic High School distance runner Madison Osterberg is hoping less is more when it comes to the Michigan High School Athletic Association state track and field meet this year.

Graham Gumper learned a new race but won’t be performing it for Hanover-Horton at the state finals.

Both are state medalists the past few track and field seasons running in the event for the last time.

Osterberg is the defending champion in the 1,600-meter run in Division 3. Last year she won a medal in every event but somewhat ran out of gas in the 3,200-run.

“I won’t be running in the 3,200-meter run … that is a difficult quad for the state meet,” Osterberg said. “Hopefully we can qualify for the 1,600-meter relay and I can help the team earn points.”

Lumen Christi won the 3,200- and 1,600-meter relays at the regional meet at Hillsdale on Friday. She has also qualified for the 800- and 1,600-meter runs.

Osterberg will be taking her talent to Michigan State University next fall to run cross country and compete in track.

“I fell in love with the team (at MSU) and all of the runners I have competed with over the years,” Osterberg said.

Gumper has learned to love a new event this season … the hurdles. What started out as a crazy idea by his coach has led to Gumper winning a number of 110-meter hurdle races and earning points for the Comets.

He chose not to run in the event at regionals since the race is right before the 100-meter dash and just before a relay race.

Gumper has mastered the 3-step concept in hurdles.

“I still have trouble staying low to the ground and leaning forward,” Gumper said.

He doesn’t have trouble running fast as Gumper is a two-time medalist in the 100-meter dash at the Division 3 state meet.

Gumper qualified for the 100- and 200-meter dash events at the state event this season.

“I would like to be top three in the 100 and on the podium at the state meet in the 200,” Gumper said. “The state meet is tough because you have to keep your nerves down and don’t get caught up in the atmosphere.”

Both Osterberg and Gumper will be competing in the MHSAA state track and field finals Saturday, June 1, at Kent City High School near Grand Rapids.
