(September 18, 2022 8:00 AM) Western High School volleyball player Brynn Rogers did not know why her teammates were congratulating her after a point during the Lumen Christi/Western match at home on Wednesday.
Then the sign went up.
Rogers had just eclipsed the 2,000 assist club at Western – an exclusive club with only Rogers and Hayden Fortress.
The Panthers went on to win the match 3-0 against their rivals for Jackson.
“My teammates just started running up to me and I am like what is going on,” Rogers said. “I didn’t know what was happening.”
To make the accomplishment more amazing, Rogers and her classmates are part of the COVID kids who lost a number of games during their sophomore season due to COVID 19.
She has started as the setter at Western since her sophomore season. The senior plays the sport all year, participating in the MICA League out of Concord during the winter.
“I love the friends I have been able to make through volleyball,” Rogers said. “They all act like a family.”
Rogers is responsible for getting to the second shot of a rally in an attempt to set up a teammate. That can be the hardest part according to Rogers.
“Tracking down the ball to get to my hitters is the hardest part about being a setter,” Rogers said. “You have to get there.
“All of my hitters call different numbers so I know who to hit (the volleyball) to.”
The Panthers are 11-4-2 overall on the season and 2-0 in the Interstate-8 Conference. Last weekend they won the Mason Invitational.
Rogers would like to continue to play volleyball in college, but has no firm plans as to where she would like to attend. She is very certain about a course of study. Rogers works at Orthopaedic Rehab Specialist as an assistant to the physical therapists.
“It makes me more confident in knowing what I want to do (after college),” Rogers said.
She maintains a 3.9 grade point average on a 4.0 scale and is active in the school’s senior leadership class.
“I like to be friendly to everyone in my school,” Rogers said.
