
Brogan Reaches Football Milestone in Lumen Christi Win

(September 23, 2023 8:18 M ET) There are only three high school football coaches in Michigan with 400 or more wins.
And one now resides in Jackson County.
Lumen Christi Catholic High School Coach Herb Brogan won his 400th game as a head coach following a 35-7 win over Dearborn Divine Child Friday at home.
Napoleon, Lumen Christi, Western, and Addison are all undefeated on the season following wins Friday night.
Here is a look at some of the key players in each of the Jackson-area football games.
Columbia Central 29, Quincy 12: The Golden Eagles improved to 2-3 on the season with the non-conference win over Quincy. Blake Evans ran for 86 yards and one score and Ben O’Neil threw for 158 yards and two scores for CCHS. Nic Richardson and Brendon Bernstein each caught touchdown passes for the Golden Eagles. Defensively Mason Czubachowski finished with 10 tackles and Blake Hoskins added nine tackles and a pick-six for the Golden Eagles. CCHS will host Jonesville Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
Michigan Center 48, East Jackson 14: Since being shut out by Lumen Christi in week one, the Cardinals have averaged nearly 43 points per game. Michigan Center is now 4-1 overall while East Jackson is 2-3. Austin Tingley threw for 185 yards and one score and Caleb Weaver rushed for 105 yards and one score for the Trojans. Deangelo Alexander caught a touchdown and Weaver caught 10 passes for 120 yards for EJHS. East Jackson hosts Manchester Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The Cardinals travel to Grass Lake for a key Cascades Conference matchup at 7 p.m.
Napoleon 35, Grass Lake 26: Grant Bradley did it with his legs on Friday night for the Pirates. The Napoleon senior ran for nearly 200 yards and scored one rushing and two passing scores for the Pirates. Mason Roth was the workhorse for Napoleon with 192 yards on 32 carries and three scores. Quinn Odegard and Roth both recorded sacks for Napoleon on the defensive side of the football. The game was a battle of two undefeated teams in the Cascades Conference. Grass Lake is now 4-1 on the season following the loss. Napoleon will host Leslie next Friday while Grass Lake hosts Michigan Center for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
Hanover-Horton 44, Homer 7: Hanover-Horton High School got off the schneid with a win at Homer Friday night. The Comets are now 1-4 on the season following the lopsided win. Hanover-Horton got its running game together with nearly 300 yards rushing. Davon Ackley ran for 78 yards, Graham Gumper finished with 71 yards and two scores, and A.J. Fielder added 65 yards and two touchdowns for the Comets. Logan Blackledge caught three passes from Luke Soper including two for touchdowns. Hanover-Horton will host Reading in a non-conference matchup Friday at 7 p.m. Homer travels to Addison for a 7 p.m. kickoff next Friday.
Jackson 66, Ypsilanti Community 22: The Viking exploded for 44 points in the second half on homecoming night. Jackson is now 4-1 and looking like a solid playoff team. Ypsilanti Community fell to 1-4 with the loss. The Vikings will travel to Adrian for a 7 p.m. kickoff next Friday.
Lumen Christi 35, Dearborn Divine Child 7: Kadale Williams ran for 214 yards and scored four touchdowns as the Titans improved to 5-0 on the season. The offense exploded in the second half after leading by 14-7 in the first. Williams scored on runs of 38 and 34 yards to begin the fourth quarter. Isaac Rehberg closed out the scoring with an 18-yard touchdown run late in the contest. Timmy Crowley threw for 71 yards on 6-for-13 passing. Pierre Gray intercepted a pass and nearly scored for the Titans and Cassius Griffin finished with nine stops. The loss is the second of the season for Divine Child – both to Jackson County football teams. The Titans travel to Detroit Loyola – the first of four consecutive road games – next Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff. LCCHS Coach Herb Brogan earned his 400th win as a head coach – becoming only the third coach in Michigan history to have 400 wins. He is 400-94 at Lumen Christi.
Western 47, Northwest 6: The Panthers improved to 5-0 with a homecoming win against Northwest Friday night. The Mounties are now 2-3 on the season. Reed Myers was 15-for-22 passing for 148 yards, with one passing and one rushing touchdown for Western. Alex Trudell ran for 149 yards and two scores, and Maverick Hammond, Gibson French, and Mitchell Williams all scored touchdowns for the Panthers. Landon Heavy finished with seven tackles and an interception and French intercepted two passes including a pick-six for Western. The Panthers will travel to Harper Creek next Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Northwest hosts Gabriel Richard for a 7 p.m. kickoff next Friday.

Springport 34, Reading 16: They may still be partying at the Hotel Tavern in Springport following a big win over Reading. The Spartans earned its first win since Oct. 22, 2021, with the victory over Reading Friday night. Rylinn Hale finished with nearly 100 rushing yards, one touchdown, and 13 tackles for the Spartans. Touchdowns were also scored by Eli Dyer, Gavin Lightner, and Ckyler Jones. The Spartans travel to Bronson Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
Addison 38, Jonesville 14: Addison improves to 5-0 on the season and Jonesville is 1-4 following the Cascades Conference tilt. Spencer Brown ran for two touchdowns and 152 yards on the ground for Addison. Mikey Trumble scored twice, and single touchdowns were scored by Jaxen Sword, Joe Clark, and Drew Spink. Leslie trailed 28-14 following a 34-yard touchdown run by Jayden Colby, but Addison scored the final four touchdowns of the game. Addison hosts Homer and Jonesville travels to Columbia Central for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Friday.
Ida 28, Hillsdale 6: Jace Lennox finished with 11 rushing yards for Hillsdale and Miles Brown scored the only touchdown for Hillsdale (1-4). Stephen Petersen was a monster on defense with more than 20 tackles for Hillsdale. The Hornets host Adrian Madison next Friday at 7 p.m.
Manchester 55, Leslie 12: Manchester High School stays alive for a possible Cascades Conference championship with the victory. The Flying Dutchmen are 4-1 overall for the season while Leslie is 2-3. They were flying in the first half, scoring 24 points in the first and second quarters. Kannon Duffing broke a 57-year-old passing record for most touchdown passes in a career in the contest. He finished with 190 passing yards and three scores – now with 36 touchdown passes for his career. Blake Sloan ran for 168 yards and three scores for Manchester. Jeff Sangster added two field goals and Bubba Duffing had 10 tackles for Manchester. Leslie threw for 121 yards in the contest including two touchdown passes in the final quarter. The Flying Dutchmen travel to East Jackson for a 7 p.m. kickoff while Leslie travels to Napoleon next Friday.
Bath 22, Stockbridge 14: The Panthers fell to 1-4 on the season with the road loss at Bath. Stockbridge led 14-0 on a pair of touchdown passes from Jalen Rogozinski to Shannon Henderson and Drew Robinson. The Stockbridge quarterback finished with 177 passing yards. Bath scored three times in the third quarter to pull ahead. Trevor Patterson finished with 13 stops on the defensive side of the football for the Panthers. Stockbridge hosts Saranac next Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
