The No. 3 ranked Spring Arbor University men’s basketball team held off Taylor University to extend its winning streak to nine games on Saturday. For the second time this year the team tied the program record for consecutive victories. The first one was halted by a loss to Taylor in Upland, Indiana back on December 1st, but SAU was able to exact a bit of revenge on Saturday afternoon inside the McDonald Athletic Center, defeating the Trojans 71-69.
The Cougars stand at 23-4 on the season now, an incredible feat at any level. On Saturday Paul Marandet finished with a game-high 26 points. The reigning Crossroads League Player of the Week went 9-for-14 from the field and 8-for-10 from the free throw line. Marandet also added three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Spring Arbor shot 51 percent from the floor (25-for-49) over the weekend.
For the second time this season a nine-game winning streak was snapped on. The No. 3 ranked Spring Arbor University men’s basketball fell to No. 6 Mount Vernon Nazarene University 79-59 on Tuesday evening inside the McDonald Athletic Center. One of the best shooting teams in the Crossroads League, Mount Vernon Nazarene shot 54 percent from the field and made 12 three-pointers . It was the Cougars first home loss of the season.
This is likely a loss that won’t stick with the Cougars, as they have been incredible all season long and look to continue that trend. Durnell scored a team-high 18 points and grabbed six rebounds in the loss. Jeff Beckman notched his eighth double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds. With his 12 boards, Beckman joined became the 23rd player in program history to reach 600 career rebounds.
Next for Spring Arbor:
Spring Arbor will play their next two games on the road. They travel to No. 17 Bethel College (19-8, 8-7 CL) on Saturday. Then face off with No. 5 Indiana Wesleyan University (23-4, 12-3 CL) on Tuesday.
