Lumen Christi High School’s Ice Hockey team is starting to heat up as their season gets underway. The Titans are looking to work off of momentum built just a year ago as they made an appearance in MHSAA playoffs. In spite of a disappointing loss, they hope to have great success and return again this season.

The team has already generated 24 goals to their opponents 19. They may have started the year 3-3, but this is a team that has huge potential to get hot down the stretch. All of the pieces appear to be in place for the young Titan Hockey team.

Gavin Warner, a Junior is in his third year on the team. He has grown and is now 6’3”. Head Coach Mike Wartella says he has “begun to learn to use his size” and increased his level of play over the last few games as well. The team allowed 30-40 shots per game in their first few contests, but now have cut down on that number. Through six games he has a save percentage of .896. Good for 163 saves.

“All of the guys are here now,” said 34th year Coach Wartella. “We had a bit of a slow start. Seven guys were on the state championship football team and only had a few practices going into the first game against Flint Powers.”

Titan Hockey Upcoming Games and Results so Far:

The key player offensively for the Titans is Cade Gregory. He is the current top scorer for the team. He was the top scorer last year as well, but already has 9 points and 5 goals this season.

As far as grit goes, Zack Witton is the prototypical power forward. At 6’2” and 185 pounds, he has the set of skills needed to compete. Coach Wartella says he has a great shot and can grow and learn significantly this season. He has four goals so far this year already.

“Our team has leadership, teamwork and character,” said the veteran Coach. “They all seem to really like each other and get along. It’s nice to see them working together and pushing each other. They’re making decisions much more quickly now than they did in their first few games.”
