Selby Classic Pits Best of Jackson Area Track, Field Athletes

A chance to see how athletes from Division 4 schools stack up against D-1 programs.

Or a chance to see some budding stars of the future in Jackson-area track and field.

Those are some of the storylines heading into the annual James R. Selby Track Classic Tuesday at Jackson High School.

Field events are scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. and running events at 6:30 p.m. according to www.Athletic.net.

Listed below are the top 10 times, heights or distances heading into the Jackson-area meet Tuesday.

Obviously with a nine-lane track, there will be only nine contestants in the sprints. More athletes will be included for distance races and field events.

Some of the more interesting races should develop early in the running portion of the meet. Three runners – Kloe Franklin of Lumen Christi, Ashleigh Simon of Grass Lake, and Bradie Lehman of Concord – have all run under 13 seconds in the 100-meter dash. Shaniah Mohead of Jackson is not too far behind at 13.05 seconds in the 100.

Traditional cross country powerhouse teams Lumen Christi and Hanover-Horton should dominate the middle- and long-distance races.

Grass Lake should dominate the shorter relays while Lumen Christi is a prohibitive favorite in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter relay.

Returning state champion Madison Osterberg in the 1,600-meter run – a Michigan State signee – is the favorite in the 800- and 1,600-meter runs.

Perhaps the best battle will be in the shot put as three athletes are within inches of one another. Jaylyn Perkins of Homer leads the pack with a throw of 35 feet, 3 inches, Hope Overweg of Springport is second at 35-2, and Mariah Kerley of East Jackson has a toss of 35 feet even this season.

The best event on the boys’ side could be the long jump. DeVonta Habern of Napoleon leads a pack of leapers who are all over 21-6 feet. Habern set a school record with a 22-0 jump, Caleb Rudd-Jones of Western is two inches behind him, and Mekhi Wingfield finished second in the state in D-4 last year.

For track and field spectators who love speed, Ahmad Ameen of Jackson is your man.

He is the top seed in the 200-meter dash (21.64) and the 400-meter dash (47.66).

Brennan Faber and the beefy boys from Western could put on a show in the shot put. They have four of the top six throws this season and Faber could go over 60 feet at the meet.

So, who is going to win and who is going to surprise everyone? It will all be settled at Jackson High School Tuesday night.
