Last year: 3-6 overall
Last season the Springport High School football team was behind the eight ball as their coach was hired late and the weightroom was under construction.
The Spartans are making up for lost time.
Second-year Coach Matt Rohde – who is also the powerlifting coach at Springport – said the Spartans have hit the weightroom in record numbers.
“I was thrilled to have a full year of off-season workouts,” Rohde said. “The weightlifting work we have put in will show up on the defensive side of the football this season.”
Key returnees for the Spartans are Rylinn Hale (quarterback/linebacker), Gabe Rainey (receiver/defensive back), Dylan Schroll (defensive back), Kaden Dickinson (lineman), Kyle Larocque (lineman), Hunter Mulckey (lineman), Eli Dyer (kicker), and Tyree Hill (receiver/defensive back).
“We have learned that you have to work hard in the off season,” Dylan Schroll said. “You get out of it (weight training) what you put into it.”
Some key newcomers for Springport include Travis Riehle (lineman), Skylar Jones (receiver/defensive back), and Nick Nowery (lineman).
The Spartans expect to have 25 players at the varsity level and 20 on the junior varsity team. Last year’s win against Grass Lake was the first crossover win for the Spartans, according to Rohde.
Springport knocked off Napoleon at home last year and probably knocked the Pirates out of the playoffs. The Spartans will travel to Napoleon on Sept. 16.
