(March 27, 2024 10:36 AM ET) A special election is happening in 2024 for the City of Jackson’s Ward 5. Residents interested in running for the City Council seat have until Tuesday, April 23 at 4 p.m. to submit completed nominating petitions and required affidavits to the City Clerk’s Office.
The Ward 5 City Council seat became vacant in Sept. 2023 with the resignation of former City Councilmember Karen Bunnell. The City Charter states that a council vacancy must be filled with an appointment until a special election can be held. In Nov. 2023, the City Council appointed Shalanda Hunt to fill the vacancy until the next election cycle.
To become a candidate listed on the ballot, interested Ward 5 residents must submit completed nominating petitions and required affidavits by Tuesday, April 23 at 4 p.m. The petitions are available at the City Clerk’s Office, First Floor of Jackson City Hall, 161 W. Michigan Ave. Candidates must be a Ward 5 resident to be eligible.
A primary election will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2024 if there are more than two candidates who submitted verified paperwork. The special election will be held during the Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024 General Election. The winning candidate will serve the rest of this seat’s term, which ends in Nov. 2025.
Ward 5 boundaries are below and available to view on the City website. Interested candidates may review petition procedures in an online version of the City Charter.
