A $15 putting mirror is paying big dividends for Lumen Christi Catholic School senior Conor Spencer.
The mirror helps a golfer with alignment, stroke length and direction.
Spencer defeated two-time Jackson City Champion Mike Brockie 2 up in the tournament at Cascades Golf Course.
Seven of the eight matches were completed in the third round on Tuesday. The Mike Raymond/ Logan Anuszkiewicz match was delayed as Raymond experienced a rain delay at another event.
The match did not begin until 6:20 p.m.
Raymond leads 2 up after 12 holes and play is expected to begin Wednesday at 7 a.m.
In other matches, Luke Girodat earned a 1-up win over Bret Valkuchak in 19 holes; Riley Hestwood won 7-5 over Chris Chaney; Mark Kurzynowski won 2-1 over medalist Brian Carney; Brogan Brockie earned a 3-2 victory over Tom Raymond; Cody Lysher won 2-1 against Todd Marston; and Steve Maddalena earned a 2-1 win over Greg Zeller.
The results set up quarterfinal matches of the Raymond/Anuszkiewicz winner versus Spencer; Girodat versus Hestwood; Kurzynowski versus Brockie; and Lysher versus Maddalena.
Quarterfinal matches will be played Wednesday or Thursday; the semifinals are scheduled for Friday; and the 36-hole final on Saturday.
Spencer made a pair of long putts to pull away in the match Tuesday afternoon.
“I bought a $15 putting mirror on Amazon,” Spencer said. “I made putts of 25 feet on 10 and 20 feet on 11 in a close match.”
Spencer – who will be a senior at LCCHS – said he enjoys playing in the City Championship against some of the seasoned players.
“It is really a fun mix of experienced players and young guys,” Spencer said. “Age doesn’t matter as it is great competition.
“It is a very strong field.
Spencer recently advanced to the sweet 16 in the Michigan Junior State Amateur.
