(5-9-2025, 11:10PM): A late rally in both games helped Springport take first place in the Big 8 Conference on Friday, defeating Bronson at home.
In game one, Springport held control for the first two innings. Pitcher Drew Sanford was dealing early, striking out five batters after two innings. Sanford along with Gibson Overweg each hit a single to open the batting for the Spartans.
Bronson, who came into Friday with an undefeated conference record, had a 1-0 lead in the 4th inning until they broke it open. Three singles and a double set up a monster grandslam by Carson Stevens to make it a 5-0 Vikings lead.
Sanford responded for SHS, hitting his own solo homerun in the 4th to get the Spartans’ slow rally back started. Two hits and three RBIs by Drew Kregel helped Springport cut the deficit to just 5-4 after six innings. A sacrifice fly drove Overweg home in the 7th to give the Spartans a game one win, 6-5.
Four different Spartans tallied two hits, Drew Sanford struck out 11 batters and allowed just five hits.
An RBI double and a stolen bag helped Springport take an early 2-0 lead in game two. Bronson wouldn’t tie the game until the 5th inning, when an RBI double from Warner Wotta tied it up. Two singles by the Vikings helped them take 3-2 lead in the 6th.
An RBI single from Bo Lightner and RBI double from Drew Sanford helped them take the 4-3 lead in the 7th inning. Springport would hold on to win game two and sweep the Big 8 doubleheader, now taking first place in the conference.
Springport improves to 16-2 overall as host face Athens on Saturday.
