(May 12, 2023 10:22 AM ET) The Jackson County Michigan Historical Society is hosting two historical marker unveiling ceremonies at the Jackson Train Station, 501 E. Mich. Ave., on Sat., May 13 from 1-2 p.m.

At 1 p.m., the Society will unveil a newly-installed State of Michigan Historical Marker on the north grounds of the depot (in the grassy area once known as “Le Grande Square”). This marker, titled “Michigan Central Railroad Depots,” celebrates Jackson’s role as a rail hub and as a transportation corridor in the Underground Railroad. This self-standing cast iron marker was researched by Linda Hass of the Jackson County Michigan Historical Society and approved by the Michigan Historical Commission earlier this year.

Directly following this outdoor ceremony,  around 1:30 p.m., the ceremony moves inside the depot to unveil five wall-mounted markers that celebrate different historic milestones involving the depot property, from its grand opening in 1873 to presidential visits. These markers represent a collaboration between the Jackson County Michigan Historical Society and the L.H. Field Family Foundation, which provided grant funding for the five markers.

The public is invited to attend the unveiling ceremonies.

The Jackson Train Station, a historical gem, remains the oldest, designer-built passenger station still in use in the United States.

The train station is featured on the Amtrak site, Great American Stations, here.
