Construction continues in to the fall on several area City of Jackson and MDOT projects. There will be complete street closings on some of these projects.
What you need to know for next week:
- Kibby Road to remain closed for another week
- Concrete work set for Louis Glick, W. Michigan, Washington intersection
- Jackson and Cortland streets will likely open to traffic in one month
- Water main testing continues on Louis Glick Highway
- Cooper Street to Close at Railroad Crossing
W Michigan Avenue between Brown and Steward (MDOT)
Work on this MDOT administered project to replace water mains, sewers, sidewalks and reconstruct the road with new curb and gutters and concrete pavement continues on schedule.
All water mains along the stretch of W. Michigan Ave. have been installed, and contractors have connected the main and sanitary sewer to homes and businesses along that stretch. Crews have finished paving the south side of the street and the base course on the north side is roughly 70 percent complete.
Next week, contractors will continue to work to complete the base course on the north side of the street, and lay concrete at the intersection of Louis Glick, Washington and W. Michigan Ave.
Traffic shifts will continue throughout the project, but access to businesses and homes remains open.
Cooper Street/I-94 BL/M-50
On Monday, October 16, Cooper Street/I-94 Business Loop/M-50 will be closed at the Amtrak railroad crossing, just south of Michigan Avenue, in downtown Jackson.
The Cooper Street railroad crossing will be closed for reconstruction. It is expected to reopen by Friday, October 27.
A detour will be posted when the crossing is closed. Northbound Cooper Street traffic will be directed to Washington Avenue to East Street to Michigan Avenue, back to Cooper Street. Eastbound Michigan Avenue traffic will be directed to Washington Avenue to East Street, back to Michigan Avenue. And southbound Cooper Street traffic will be directed to Michigan Avenue to Francis Street to Washington Avenue, back to Cooper Street.
East Michigan Avenue/I-94 BL/M-50
On Monday, October 30, Michigan Avenue/I-94 Business Loop/M-50 will be closed at the Amtrak railroad crossing, just west of Cooper Street.
The East Michigan Avenue crossing will be closed for reconstruction and is expected to reopen by Saturday, November 11.
A detour will be posted when the crossing is closed. Westbound Michigan Avenue traffic will be directed to Cooper Street, to Franklin, to Francis Street, back to Michigan Avenue.
Note: This second railroad crossing closure is contingent on the first closure at Cooper Street. The E. Michigan Avenue crossing will not close until Cooper Street has reopened.
Kibby Road between West Avenue and City Limits
1) removal and replacement of the pavement on the south side of the Kibby Road boulevard with new gravel base and hot mix asphalt,
2) removal of the curb and pavement on the north side,
3) construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Kibby and Denton and
4) construction of a new non-motorized mixed-use trail with a concrete surface in the location of the former north side of the Kibby Road boulevard.
The project began Sept. 14 after lanes were closed in both directions. Currently, the street is closed as contractors work to connect the watermain to homes and fire hydrants along that stretch of road – a short detour is being used on Horton and Weatherwax Drive. Crews expect the street to be closed for another week.
The project will be constructed in two phases. Phase 1 will consist of water main replacement and trail construction in the fall of 2017. Phase 2 will consist of street paving and roundabout construction in the spring of 2018.
Various work set for this autumn
Projects along Jackson Street, between Franklin and Washington; Cortland Street, between Franklin and Washington; Michigan Avenue, between First and Blackstone; Dewey Avenue, between Clinton and Lansing; and Fleming, between Maquire and Blakely and portions of Steward Avenue are set for water main replacement and trench construction.
Cortland Street will likely open in roughly one month, as will Jackson Street.
Downtown Jackson Loop Two-Way Conversion
Crews continue to update the lighting signals along the downtown Jackson loop in preparation to convert the streets to two-way traffic with a middle turn lane. Work is expected to continue through December, with the project scheduled to be done by Christmas.
Louis Glick Highway Watermain
Louis Glick Highway at the Jackson Street intersection is down a lane, while drivers on Jackson Street can’t drive through the intersection going north or south until the watermain is complete. Crews are currently testing the main, and once test results are returned indicating water that passes through the main is drinking safe, they can continue working.
