Tindall Wins First Major with Spring Thaw Victory

(April 25, 2021 4:40 PM) When longtime Jackson area golfer Steve Maddalena says that is the best putting round he has have seen in a while it must mean a golfer has done something special.

Andrew Tindall was the man Maddalena was talking about.

Tindall had an “up and down round,” but it was enough to win his first major tournament in Jackson County with a win at the 2021 Spring Thaw at Cascades Golf Course in Jackson on Sunday.

Temperatures in the high 40s and windy conditions met golfer on Sunday at Cascades. 

Tindall finished with rounds of 69 and 72 to shoot 3-under-par 141 for the weekend.

He edged Maddalena – a four-time winner of the event – by one stroke as he finished with a 142.

Colin O’Connell and Mike Brockie finished tied for third at 144, Tom Butterfield shot a 2-under-par 70 to finish fifth at 146, and Jackson High School golf coach Greg Zeller placed sixth at 147. 

Tindall has competed in numerous local tournaments over the years but has never challenged for the top spot.

“It was an up and down round … I leaked a little oil down the stretch,” Tindall said. “I putted really well these two days and it kept me in it.

“When Steve Maddalena says ‘that is the best round putting he has seen in a while,’ you must have putted well.”

Tindall was one stroke behind Maddalena and Tim Pickering heading into Sunday. He shot a 3-under-par 69 on Saturday and an even par 72 on Sunday. 

The 2007 Manchester High School graduate said he did not have a number to shoot in round two.

“You are just trying to keep up with him (Maddalena) and make more putts than he did,” Tindall said. “This weekend I found the confidence that I can be out there and play well … and make putts.

“I am ecstatic.”
