(November 9, 2021 5:14 PM)TRUE Community Credit Union reached a milestone this week, its 30th year of providing free financial education resources to Jackson, Ingham and Washtenaw counties.

TRUE Community Credit Union has partnered with various community organizations to provide a free and fun understanding of how money works and how to save, earn and spend wisely. Some of the organizations partnered with include: The Interfaith Shelter, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Girl Scouts, Partial to Girls, United Way and the YMCA.

In 1991, TRUE Community Credit Union, formerly known as CP Federal Credit Union, was approached by the Western School District to participate in a grant-funded program that provided financial literacy to their students. TRUE Community Credit Union now partners with 29 local schools and has donated more than $30,000 to school partners this year.

Within each school partnership, TRUE Community Credit Union provides youth the opportunity to be a member or work at their school’s Student-Run Credit Union or enroll in the Jackson $aves program.

The Student-Run Credit Union program functions as a credit union branch; however, the students operate the in-school branches. Students can deposit money into their accounts without leaving school or volunteer to work at their school’s credit union to gain experience learning about money. This provides a unique, interactive way for students to learn about saving money and making good financial choices. The program is designed to serve students, teachers and staff at participating schools.

Another program we offer is Jackson $aves. The Jackson $aves program is a free children’s savings account program designed to assist with education and training expenses after high school. Incoming kindergarteners are eligible to enroll. Students who enroll in the program will receive a $50.00 opening deposit into their Jackson $aves account. Students can save for their future at any TRUE Community branch location and any student branch location. Also, students can earn incentives to help grow their accounts.

Chrissy Siders, President/CEO of TRUE Community Credit Union, stated, “We are deeply aware of the importance of pouring into our future generations and are honored to partner with the phenomenal educators in our communities. We are grateful for the opportunity to come alongside them to build critical financial education skills that will only enhance the work being done to support the mental, physical and social well-being of our youth. Together, we are working to instill hope and promise in those who will lead the way for years to come.”

To celebrate TRUE Community Credit Union’s Financial Education team’s 30 years, TRUE Community Credit Union will host and sponsor a variety of community events and giveaways throughout the school year.
