(March 9, 2021 10:31 PM) The Vandercook Lake High School varsity competitive cheer almost didn’t know how to react when it was announced the Jayhawks had won the Cascades Conference title.

They were probably used to someone else – namely Michigan Center or Addison – being named as conference champions.

But the Jayhawks won the conference title on Tuesday at home.

Vandercook – winners of two of three jamborees this season – won the championship with a three-round total of 755.92. Michigan Center finished second (746.24), Addison was third (717.66), Napoleon took fourth place (623.9), and Grass Lake placed fifth (614.1).

It wasn’t until VCL Coach Sarah DuBois held up the conference trophy that the Jayhawks celebrated.

“We just work hard every week and stay focused about ourselves,” DuBois said. “Winning two jamborees was huge.

“That boost of moral is what led us to the next meet.”

It is Vandercook Lake’s first Cascades Conference title in competitive cheer.

“For a season that you didn’t think was going to happen, it is hard to believe we are in the final stretch,” DuBois said.

Kylie Baldwin, Zoee Lagow, Morgan LeFaive, Breanna Ray, and Tessa Watson earned first-team all-conference honors for the Jayhawks.

Charlee LeCrone, Elly Trefry, Hellen Pulver, and Kylie Wilott earned first-team all-conference honors for Michigan Center.

Addison cheerleaders Marissa Douglas, Emma Spink, and Taylor Wils were named as first-team all-conference performers.

Malia Hunt and Lily Flack of Napoleon and Hailei Sherwood and Katelyn Magos of Grass Lake earned first-team all-conference honors as voted on by coaches.
