A crazy year.
But better results for one local competitive cheer team.
The Vandercook Lake High School girls’ varsity competitive cheer team finished third at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 4 state finals on Saturday.
The cheer finals were moved to the Breslin Student Events Center on the campus of Michigan State University to accommodate more fans based on COVID-19 restrictions.
The finals had been held at the DeltaPlex in Grand Rapids in previous seasons.
The Jayhawks had the second highest score coming into the competition, but ended up in third place.
“I thought we did well,” VCL Coach Sarah Dubois said. “We finished strong at the end of the season.”
Hudson won the competition with a three-round total of 758.98 to repeat as Division 4 champions.
Pewamo-Westphalia finished second with 751.12 and the Jayhawks third at 729.64.
“I just told them to put it out there one more time,” DuBois said. “We just needed to finish the fight.
Vandercook Lake graduates six seniors from a nine-person team. The seniors are Kylie Baldwin, Zoee Lagow, Morgan LeFaive, Chloe Melville-Schweda, Breanna Ray, and Tessa Watson.
The Jayhawks achieved its highest finish at the state meet since placing fourth in 2014.
