Michigan Center High School senior point guard Jaleel Brown was introduced to most of the key players on the Hanover-Horton High School boys varsity basketball team.

The versatile bunch from Hanover-Horton switched a number of defenders on Brown to keep him guessing who was coming at him next.

It worked as the Comets earned a 60-41 win on the road Thursday night improving to 5-0 in the Cascades Conference. Hanover-Horton is 7-1 overall and ranked as high as No. 2 in Division 3 – depending on whose poll you look at.

Michigan Center falls to 3-5 overall, 2-3 in the conference with the loss.

Versatility on the offensive and defensive end makes it tough for opponents to figure out the Comets. A number of the players on the floor can play all five positions at both ends of the court.

“We were trying to mix it up tonight (on Brown) so he did not get comfortable with one guy guarding him all night,” HHHS senior Luc Laketa said. “Offensively, we can share the ball and I believe we have four guys who score in double digits on the team.”

Comets Coach Chad Mortimer say being that versatile makes the game easier.

“It makes defense easier when you can do that (have players who can play all five positions defensively),” Mortimer said. “We still have to get better at some things if we want to be the team we want to be.

“It is a great senior class.”

The Comets started all five seniors and have eight on the team.

That starting group helped the Comets get off to a fast start. Luc Laketa scored five points and Rhett Laketa tallied four points in the first eight minutes of action as HHHS built a 17-13 lead.

The Comets held Michigan Center to six points in the second quarter building a 12-point halftime lead at 31-19. Senior Bryce Sanders scored seven points in the second quarter for the Comets.

Seniors Mitch Sauber and Jack Brockie scored five points apiece in the third quarter for a 43-29 lead heading into the final eight minutes of action.

Luc Laketa scored seven points in the final quarter for the Comets. He finished with a team-high 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Brockie scored eight points and pulled down 10 rebounds, Sauber finished with 10 points and four steals, and Sanders and Rhett Laketa both scored eight points for the Comets.

MCHS was led by Brown with 11 points and eight rebounds, Roger Hayward scored eight points and Carter Wiley added six points and five rebounds.
