Golfer John Tarpley pulled off an upset with a win over the No. 1 seed Cody Lysher in the Jackson City Golf Championship on Saturday at Cascades Golf Course.

(August 14, 2021 8:19 PM) It was a tough day for the young guys in the Jackson City Golf Championship at Cascades Golf Course on Saturday.
The veterans won all but one of the matches in the opening round of match play golf tournament.
But overtime was needed in half of the matches at the championship in opening rounds.
Hole No. 1 at Cascades Golf Course ended the hopes for four golfers to advance in the annual tournament.
The biggest upset was No. 16 seed John Tarpley upset No. 1 seed Cody Lysher 1-up on the 19th hole.
Mike Raymond defeated Chris Chaney 1-up on the 19th hole in a battle of Nos. 8/9 seeds.
Tarpley will face Raymond on Sunday in the quarterfinals.
Cannon Risner defeated Greg Zeller 2-and-1 and Dave Mickle defeated Brogan Brockie 1-up on the 19th hole to advance in the tournament. Risner will face Mickle in another quarterfinal match on Sunday.
Bob Varner upset Riley Hestwood 1-up in 18 holes. Hestwood was the No. 2 seed in the tournament. Varner will face Mike Brockie who was a 3-and-2 winner over Justin Bunch.
Colin O’Connell defeated Zach DeFrain 2-and-1 and Nate LaZebnik needed 19 holes to defeated Sean Vann in another match. O’Connell will face LaZebnik on Sunday in a quarterfinal match.
The Sunday quarterfinal matches are scheduled to begin at noon.
Winners will advance to the semifinal and have Monday through Friday to complete that 18-hole match. The finals are scheduled for Cascades Golf Course on Saturday in the traditional 36-hole match-play format.
JCWGA Tournament: Pam Messerly shot a 77 to lead the pack in the Jackson County Womens Golf Association Rubies Tournament at Sharp Park Golf Course on Friday. Kathy Swihart shot a 78, Deb Falk finished with a 91, Sue Daniels fired a 96, Shelly Christoff finished with a 97, Beth Elliott shot a 103, Patty Kreger finished with a 108, and Dena Ewing finished with a 109. In the Diamonds Tournament, Karma Sheriff led all golfers with a 90, Nancy Showerman shot a 92, Sandy Straka and Sue Wrzesinski both shot 96s, Vickie Milosh carded a 98, Janie Bristol finished with 112, Betty Mroczka shot 114, and Barb Zantop finished with a 118. The second round of the tournament will be next Friday at Sharp Park.
