Edward and Winthrop Local Street Reconstruction
In the past week, the new water main pipe on Edward was connected to the city-wide distribution system at Winthrop and the water services for the houses on Edward were connected to the new water main. Currently, the contractor is working to connected the new pipe to the city-wide distribution system at Wildwood and connect the commercial water service at Wildwood to the new water main. Once those two tasks are accomplished, all water main items will be complete and the old water main will be abandoned.
Next week, the roadway on Edward will be graded and gravel base placed. By the end of next week or the beginning of the week thereafter, the concrete crew will be on site to place new curbs, driveways and sidewalks.
Francis Street between Washington and Glick
The project to upgrade sidewalk ramps and repave Francis Street began this week. Over the past week, temporary barricades, signs and barrels were put in place to close the street to traffic. A survey crew marked the limits of those sections of curb and sidewalk to be removed and replaced. The contractor has begun sawcutting the pavement and sidewalks at the removal limits. The sawcutter’s work will continue into next week.
Next week, a crew with excavators and loaders will arrive on Francis Street to remove those sections of curb and sidewalk that are scheduled for replacement.
Jackson Street between Washington and Glick
The project to upgrade sidewalk ramps and repave Jackson Street began this week. Temporary barricades, signs and barrels have been put into place to close the west half of the street to traffic. Jackson Street remains open to traffic on the east half of the street albeit with reduced lanes.
Over the past week, the contractor has been removing those sections of curb and sidewalk that are scheduled for replacement. Next week, removals will be completed. New catch basins and storm sewers will then be installed at various locations. The concrete crew will arrive on site the week thereafter to place the replacement curbs and sidewalk ramps.
Mechanic Street between Morrell Street and Washington Avenue
The contractor continued installing new water main pipe between Wesley and Washington over the past week. By early next week, water main pipe installation will be complete over the entire project. Also completed last week was the testing of sections of previously installed water main at the south end of the project.
Next week, the contractor will work to connect those successfully tested sections of water main at the south end of the project to the city-wide distribution system at the intersections. This work will require water shut-off periods that typically last about six hours. Door hanger notices will be placed on the front door of each impacted residence a day prior to a water service interruption.
Michigan Avenue between Blackstone Street and Francis Street
Over the past week, the electrician’s crew continued their work to install electrical outlets throughout the work zone. By early next week, the installation of new conduit, outlet housing and junction boxes will be complete on the south side of the street. Next week, the crew’s work will continue on the south side as wire is be pulled through the conduit and outlets installed.
West Avenue Construction between Michigan Avenue and Wildwood Avenue
In the past week, the contractor for the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) completed the connection of water services from buildings in the work zone to the new water main. Next week, work will be concentrated in the intersection of West Avenue and Wildwood Avenue. Within the intersection, pavement will be removed, the new water main on West Avenue connected to the city-wide distribution system at Wildwood, and the pavement restored with new asphalt. During this period, the intersection will be closed to traffic. By the end of the week, all work within the intersection will be completed and the intersection reopened to traffic. The next tasks will be the grading and placement of the gravel base within the roadway between Michigan Avenue and West Avenue.
