(May 1, 2020 10:50 AM) By May 1 Indianapolis Colts’ football player Khari Willis should be at organized team activities in Indianapolis.

But the Jackson native is working out with brothers in southwest Jackson along with a new weapon – a Jugs machine.

The machine spits out spirals with the opportunity to change the trajectory and speed of passes.

“I try to catch between 300 to 500 interceptions per day,” Willis said. “Right now, I am working on interception techniques using off-season workouts.”

Willis said he is turning the pressure up to 60 or 70 on the Jugs machine.

“The Jugs can throw the ball up to 60 yards with a spiral every time,” Willis said. “It helps you to understand angles.”

Willis finished with 71 tackles – third best on the Colts’ team – after playing in 14 games and starting nine games at strong safety.

The Colts finished 7-9 in the AFC South Division. Willis is excited about the team’s additions to the team – most notable all-pro quarterback Philip Rivers and cornerback Xavier Rhodes.

Indianapolis drafted nine players in the NFL draft last week and signed a number of undrafted players.

“I haven’t had a chance to meet most of them,” Willis said.

The Michigan State University player said he expects to be a leader in the secondary for the Colts.

“I will apply my leadership skills this season,” Willis said.

Willis said he is working out with a trainer in Lansing during the extended off season.

Working out with his brothers Terrell and Bobby is good for Willis. Both played college football after starring at Lumen Christi Catholic High School.

The NFL has not decided on a restart date for the 2020 season. The league is considering playing games without fans due to the coronavirus scare.

“I can’t imagine playing without fans, but we may have no choice,” Willis said. “Right now, I have to stay ready … that is the only way you can approach the upcoming season.”
