Spring Arbor Named NAIA Champions of Character Five-Star Institution

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has recently announced the 2013-14 Champions of Character Five-Star Institution Awards and, for the fourth consecutive year, Spring Arbor University has been recognized with the prestigious honor.   The Champions of Character process is designed to instill an understanding of character values in sport and provide practical tools for student athletes, coaches and parents to use in modeling exemplary character traits.   Every NAIA institution’s and conference's progress in pursuing character education is tracked and recognized annually for achievements in training, promotion and conduct in competition. The Champions of Character Scorecard measures commitment in five key areas and totals 100 points. Gold (90-100 points), Silver (75-89 points) and Bronze levels (60-74 points) are awarded.   A total of 168 institutions were named Five-Star Award winners, including 12 gold level institutions, 60 silver and 96 bronze. Spring Arbor accumulated 77 points during the 2013-14 academic year, earning silver level status.   Additionally, 17 out of 23 conferences were named Champions of Character Five-Star Conferences, including the Crossroads League, marking the fourth straight year receiving the honor. Eight of the ten universities in the league garnered Five-Star Institution Awards.

What else can really be said? On Nov. 1, in the D-4 final, Hersha won his third-consecutive state championship, finishing first overall in a time 15:23.0. “It’s absolutely amazing to think about,” he added. “Hardly anyone wins one title. Nobody wins two. To win three, you can’t even describe. It’s incredible.” “It feels great, to go through all three years of it, and be able to be successful without any injuries, was awesome,” Hersha said. “My goal this year wasn’t just to win, it was to go out and do so with a great time.” That much he accomplished. The nearest runner behind Hersha finished more than 30 seconds later. “He just went out and took charge from the start,” Jordon said. “It started with Spencer (Nousain) winning it four years ago.…
