JPS-CFH Partnership Improving Student Health & Education

The Center for Family Health's three Jackson Public School-based health centers are realizing successful outcomes of their primary goals.  Overall health of children has improved since the first center opened in 2005, children have better and easier access to health care and students are missing less class time due to health issues. Jackson Public Schools Superindendent Jeff Beal and Center for Family Health CEO Molly Kaser noted nearly 5,000 visits were recorded at the three centers in the last calendar year.    The Centers have provided both physical and emotional health resources to administrators and teachers.    The Centers are housed at the Middle School at Parkside, Northeast Elementary and Jackson High School.  The Northeast clinic also offers dental services.  Other guests:  Cheryl Graham, Manager, Re-Store at Habitat for Humanity;  Kim Hastings, Executive Director, Jackson School of the Arts;  Jeff Beagle, Jackson YMCA Turkey Trot;  Jackson High School Principal Barbara Baird-Pauli with students Parker Wilkinson and Samantha Simonetti, "Thanksgiving Giving".

Downtown Christmas Parade Friday

The 2014 Downtown Jackson Christmas Parade steps off at 6pm Friday, beginning at Michigan Avenue at First Street, traveling east to Mechanic Street.  All floats and entries will be lighted and keeping with the theme "The 12 Days of Christmas".  Parade organizer Ed Hatfield, who has been with the parade for all of its 26 years, invited parade attendees to have their photo taken with Santa at the Michigan Theatre following the parade.  The Theatre will provide hot chocolate and a free Christmas movie.  Other guests:  Linda Kline, Area Manager, MedExpress Urgent Care;  Monica Moser, President and CEO, Jackson Community Foundation;  Northwest Elementary students Madison David and Kalomb Tooker with teacher Mandy Kennedy;  John Spink, Nite Lites with Christine Gorton, Miss Jackson Crossroads;  Sue Lovell, Cascades Humane Society's Pet of the Week.

SAU Men improve to 6-0

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – After trailing late in the second half, the Spring Arbor University men’s basketball team rallied back in the final minutes to defeat Alma College 63-61 in front of an energetic crowd inside the SAU Fieldhouse on Tuesday night.   Sophomore Thomas Starks buried a three-pointer with 43 seconds remaining to tie the game before junior Xavier Prather drove to the basket and sank an acrobatic layup with 2.6 seconds left to keep the Cougars unbeaten.   Prather led the way with 14 points followed by freshman Zach Medendorp with 13. Junior Greg Hamilton and sophomore Caleb Hogans added 12 apiece while Starks collected a game-high 11 rebounds.   The first half proved to be very tight seeing five ties and seven lead changes. Alma (0-1) came charging out of the gates hitting 56 percent of its shots, including five three-pointers to stay close with the red-hot Cougars through the first 20 minutes.   With five minutes to play in the opening period and the score tied 26-26, a 6-0 Spring Arbor run gave the home team its largest lead of the game. JPS Back to Back Program Plans Fundraiser

The Jackson Public Schools French Back to Back Program is planning a silent auction and French dessert extravaganza for Thursday, November 20 at Frost School.  The event, which runs from 6:30 to 8:00 pm offers a wide array of delectable desserts for sampling and purchase, along with an extensive silent auction.  Frost Principal Jeremy Patterson and Back to Back Coordinator Donna Thomas are organizing the 7th annual auction to support the educational exchange program now in its 36th year.  Other guests:  CERN physicist and Jackson native Steven Goldfarb;  Denise Owens, Jackson County Fair Manager;  Garrick Rochow, Vice President of Customer Operations and Quality, Consumers Energy;  Laura Schlecte and Jacque Austin, "Artsy-Fartsy Marketplace", opening Thursday evening in the former Vermeulen's building;  Big Brothers Big Sisters Match of the Month with Sophia Prokos and Tiegan, Michigan Center Schools.
