Spring Arbor Men’s Soccer falls to Holy Cross

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University men’s soccer team suffered its first setback of the 2015 campaign on Monday night, dropping a 1-0 decision to Holy Cross College. It was just the third time in the last 29 matches that the Cougars failed to record a goal as the squad fell to 1-1 on the young season. Holy Cross controlled the match statistically, doubling up SAU’s shot attempts 16-8, including a commanding 9-2 advantage in the first half. Despite the high volume of shots through the first 45 minutes, the Saints were unable to find the back of the net due to the strong play between the pipes by junior goalkeeper Cobi Piper. However, the home team was able to breakthrough when Anesu Tabengwa scored off a rebound in the 59th minute providing HCC all the offensive support it would need. Piper finished the night with nine saves while sophomore Kevin Veeder led the team with two shots. “That was probably the worst I have ever seen our team play,” commented head coach Nathan Miller. “We deserved this defeat flat out. We did not compete at the required level and paid for a really bad team performance.” Miller…

The 5-4 record not only eclipsed the total win total from those three years, but made the Mounties playoff eligible for the first time since 2008 and just the third time since the automatic qualified was established some 14 years prior. In the end, there was heartbreak that the selection committee looked past Northwest, but there was momentum building, expectations soaring. And then, 2014 presented another 1-8 finish. “That was tough,” coach Corey Slater said simply earlier this week. He’s now in his fourth year with the program. “We kind of thought we had things fixed (after 2013). But I think we took some things for granted, with leadership and coming off a 5-4 season and all that. Joining the new conference was tough as well. Every week…
