No. 8 Spring Arbor overcomes early deficit to defeat Davenport 3-1

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 8 Spring Arbor University women’s soccer team overcame an early goal by Davenport University to defeat the Panthers 3-1 and earn its third straight victory on Tuesday night. With the win, the Cougars improved to 3-1 on the season while the Panthers dropped to 0-2. Davenport struck first in the 25th minute off a corner kick to open the scoring, but SAU responded immediately. Less than four minutes, freshman Bethany Balcer ripped a shot past the DU goalkeeper from 17 yards out to level the score 1-1. Just before the end of the half, Balcer would find senior Nikki Bonnema to give the Cougars a 2-1 advantage heading into the break. Spring Arbor continued to apply the pressure in the second half, outshooting the home team 9-2 in the period, and its efforts were rewarded when junior Corrie Good found the back of the net in the 72nd minute. Balcer registered four points on the night with one goal and two assists while senior netminder Sarah Yancer finished with two saves. Spring Arbor racked up 19 shots, putting 11 on target, while limiting Davenport to five. The Cougars also held an 11-3 advantage…

Following last year’s forgettable 1-8 finish, Jackson came storming out of the gate last week and rolled past Ann Arbor Huron 40-7 in a game that wasn’t even that close. It marked the first time the guys in orange and black won a season opener since beating Detroit Collegiate Prep at Northwestern 20-14 seven falls ago. “Real happy for the kids,” coach Scott Farley said about the lopsided win. “They’ve put so much work in the past 10 months getting ready for that. To see that work rewarded was pretty special.” Saying the Vikings were dominant is an understatement. The team led 20-0 by the end of the first quarter, and by halftime, had a 33-0 advantage and more than 400 yards of total offense. “We executed pretty well,” Farley said. “The defense did a nice job too.” Corey Pryor II led the way, rushing five times for 146 yards and two…
