Old Fashioned Candy & Fudge Shop to Open in September
Jackson Coffee Co. announced today that it is opening the Jackson Candy & Fudge Factory, an old-fashioned candy & fudge shop, September 22, 2015. The candy & fudge shop is located on the corner of E. Michigan Avenue and Elm Street. "We are thrilled to further invest into Jackson by opening an 1890’s style candy & fudge shop in our community.” said Brian Surgener, Jackson Coffee Co.’s president. “Every community should have that special place where they can experience a nostalgic re-creation of that classic and bygone era.” The Jackson Candy & Fudge Factory is everything you’d expect in a candy store of yesteryear. The tall ceilings are layered in decorative copper. The 1800’s walls are clay brick. Havana style fans decorate the interior. The cash register is an early brass National cash register. Circling at the top of the ceiling is a garden size train. The old fashioned décor is added to by a 12 foot fudge counter, as well as rows of nostalgic candy, decorative chocolates, & shelves of specialized gifts. It’s an atmosphere that smells of fresh caramel corn, home-made fudge and glazed cinnamon nuts. “We have put a lot of effort and thought into giving the…
Fueling the Team
By Mike Moore Staff Writer Jackson – If he’s not enjoying himself, he’s doing a poor job hiding it. As he emerged from the locker room last Thursday night following a dominant performance and a convincing win, Malik Wilks was smiling ear to ear. Is football fun right now?, the Vandercook Lake senior was asked. “What’s not fun about this,” he quipped back, his smile growing. Vandercook is in a good spot right, with its football team on the rise, a 2-0 record and picked by many to finally get back to the state playoffs. And one of the main reasons behind all those facts is Wilks, a charismatic, carefree and ultra-gifted running back/linebacker. “Every team should have a Malik Wilks,” VCL coach Steve Wolvin said following a 41-0 victory against East Jackson last week. “He’s a kid everyone loves to be around. He brings so much energy to the team. No matter what, he’s going to make sure everyone’s having a good time.” “I always like to keep that high energy, a smile on my face wherever I go,” Wilks explained. But he’s more than a good time, he just so happens to be the Jayhawks’ defensive leader and…

Western Grad Scores Goal for Albion Mens Soccer
DELAWARE, Ohio – Sophomore goalkeeper Justin Kraft collected seven saves to give Albion College a chance against an Ohio Wesleyan University side that is expected to make a run at the NCAA Division III Tournament in November. Despite Mitchell Palmer scoring his first goal at the collegiate level for Albion, Ohio Wesleyan got goals from three different players to knock off the Britons, 3-1, in the second round of the Fred Myers-adidas Invitational. Brian Schaefer pounced on a loose ball in the box for Ohio Wesleyan’s first half goal, and David Robinett and Jack Shadoan struck in the second half. Palmer got his head on a corner kick by Joey Zaremski for the Albion goal. The Britons trailed 2-1 when Palmer scored in the 61st minute. Shadoan scored 12 ½ minutes later to put the game out of reach. Jason Inglis and Evan Schweizer also placed shots on goal for the Britons. Albion, 2-1 after the first week of the season, will travel to Illinois for matches against Elmhurst College (Sept. 11) and North Park University (Sept. 12).
