City Plans Weekly Email Blast for Construction Updates

Area residents interested in a weekly update on city construction projects are now in luck. Information once reserved for engineers and media outlets alone is at citizens’ fingertips with a 2016 Dig Jackson campaign organized by city personnel. “The most common questions I get this time of year are about construction projects in the city,” Public Information Officer Will Forgrave said. “What contractors are doing; when work will be done; where are the detours - things like that. With this tool, that information is a lot easier to get and digest.” People interested in getting a weekly email update on projects should go to digjackson.com, where they can sign up for the email list and review upcoming construction projects on the site. A more detailed list of projects will then be emailed every Thursday or Friday to those who sign up for it. A total of 20 construction projects are on the docket this summer within the city of Jackson, with a handful already underway and more to come. UFC Champion Miesha Tate to be grand marshal for the FireKeepers Casino 400

BROOKLYN, Mich. (May 31, 2016) – UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Miesha Tate will serve as the grand marshal for the FireKeepers Casino 400 on June 12 at Michigan International Speedway.   Tate will give the command of “Start your engines!” when the FireKeepers Casino 400 gets underway at 1 p.m. The FireKeepers Casino 400 will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 1.   Tate is the Ultimate Fighting Championship Women’s Bantamweight Champion. She claimed the title in stunning fashion on March 5, defeating then-champ Holly Holm with a rear naked choke in the fifth round of UFC 196 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.   Tate, a fan favorite in the mixed martial arts world, will defend her title July 9 in Las Vegas against No. 4-ranked Amanda Nunes at UFC 200.   “I’m excited and honored to be the grand marshal for the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway,” Tate said. “There are a lot of things I look forward to doing at the track, but to give the command to start the engines is at the top of my list for sure.”   Training out of Las Vegas, Tate has fought professionally since 2007. Governor Appoints Roger Curtis to New 21st Century Education Commission

Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the appointments to the new 21st Century Education Commission, created by Executive Order 2016-6 to make recommendations for an education system that positions Michigan as a national leader in developing talent to address today’s economy demands. The 25-member commission includes representatives from the education, business, government, and nonprofit communities with a particular interest or expertise in education. The members, proficient in education system design at the state, regional, and local levels, will focus on how to best organize, govern, fund and hold accountable Michigan’s system of public education to achieve successful education outcomes. Membership consists of 16 gubernatorial appointees, four legislative appointees, the State Board of Education president or his designee, and four state department directors or their representatives. The Governor’s appointees are: Roger Curtis, of Onsted, is president of the Michigan International Speedway and former vice president of sales and marketing at California Speedway. Previously, he served as the senior director of Marketing and Sales at Richmond International Raceway and director of marketing and sales at Watkins Glen International. Mr. Curtis also serves as a school board member of Onsted Community Schools. He holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Indiana State University.   Alloyd…

Jackson Community Music School Announces Summer Sessions

The Jackson Community Music School will be holding an 8-week summer session starting on June 20th. In addition to private instruction in all instrument groups, the school will offering a variety of group piano classes for all ages, early childhood development classes for babies and toddlers, vocal ensemble for both students and adults, percussion and drum circle groups, and multiple classes for string players of all ages and levels. We are also holding another collaborative day-camp with the YMCA at our building with different sessions available throughout the summer. Flexible scheduling is available for private lessons. Full payment is required for any enrollment in the summer session.
