A first-time champ

Napoleon native Stuard lands first career PGA Tour victory   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Napoleon — Nearly 11 years as a pro, and this moment remained so stubbornly out of reach.   Second place twice, Napoleon native Brian Stuard admitted doubt had crept into his mind.   Would he ever taste victory on the PGA Tour?   Would coming close ever lead to coming out on top?   “I think everything goes through your mind,” he said. “You always believe you can do it, but have to wait for your day to come. I’ve always told myself it would happen eventually.”   Well, on Monday afternoon, eventually arrived.   Stuard, a 2001 graduate of Napoleon High, survived a soaked course and a two-hole playoff to win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, finally earning his first win on the PGA Tour.   “Petty exciting,” he said Monday night, noticeably struggling to put everything into words. “It’s a little overwhelming to think about the importance of it. It hasn’t quite sunk in how amazing this all is. But I’m so pleased and so happy.”   Rain forced delays of the tournament on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, eventually forcing officials to…

The new 100,000-square-foot manufacturing facility will be a supplier of instrument panel beams and other structural components for the Buick Enclave and Chevy Traverse crossover utility vehicles assembled at GM’s Lansing plant. Scheduled to begin production in April 2017, Multimatic Michigan will initially employ roughly 80 production, manufacturing engineering, quality control and administrative staff in three operating shifts, the company released in a statement earlier this month. Hiring has already begun at the plant, and the organization is currently looking to fill more new roles at the facility. For career opportunities with the company, visit careers.multimatic.com. “We’re extremely excited to have a new business come into the city and bring with it new jobs and new tax revenue to help out the community as a whole,” Mayor Bill Jors said. “It’s one more new business and one more piece of good news for Jackson citizens, which is a wonderful thing.” The city,…

Western softball team clicking on all facets, runs out to 17-2 start to the season   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Parma — Tonya Bassett is being spoiled right now, and she knows it.   The Western softball coach has a pair of dominant pitchers, a defense holding its own, and an offense slugging roughly 12 runs every time out.   The result so far is a 17-2 overall record as of Sunday night, and a team taking aim at some lofty goals moving forward.   “We’re really building on last year,” Bassett said. The Panthers were 25-14 in 2015. “We have a lot of returning girls, and we’re playing exceptionally well right now.”   And, as is usually the case come spring time success, most of that winning starts with the efforts coming from the circle.   Taylor Nichols is half of a dominant duo of pitching for Panthers, and in her most recent effort this weekend, earned the win in a 3-1 decision against Quincy in which she struck out 18 batters and allowed one hit.   The lone hit prevented what could have been her fourth no-hitter of the season.   And then there’s junior Kortney…
