VA Ann Arbor Health Care System to Host Vietnam Era Commemoration Event

The VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System will host a Vietnam era Veterans Commemoration event on Friday, May 6, 2016, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon to honor all Vietnam era Veterans and their families. There will be a formal opening ceremony at 9:30 a.m. that will include a Presentation of Colors by the Veterans Honor Guard of Washtenaw County, comments from VA officials, and guest speaker, Lt. Col. Charles S. Kettles, a decorated Vietnam Veteran and Medal of Honor nominee. There will also be a military memorabilia exhibit provided by VFW Post 423, information about the history of the Vietnam War, live music, light refreshments, as well as resource information about various VA benefits, programs, and services including VA Healthcare, Veterans Benefits Administration, National Cemetery Administration (Great Lakes National Cemetery), and Vet Centers. Veterans Service Organizations, the Washtenaw County Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Buddy to Buddy Veteran Volunteer Program will also be available to share information. I-94 Bridge Work to Start Monday in Jackson

The Michigan Department of Transportation will oversee a project to repair nine bridges along I-94 between Airport Road and the Jackson/Calhoun county line.  The project is scheduled to begin on Monday, May 9 and continue through November, 2016. The I-94 bridges on the repair docket are: - M-99 over I-94, - Gibbs Road over I-94, - I-94 over Concord Road, - Michigan Avenue over I-94, - I-94 over Parma Road, - Dearing Road over I-94, - Sandstone Road over I-94, - Blackman Road over I-94, and - Airport Road over I-94.  Traffic impacts on the overall project will be minimized as repair will be done in stages.  There will be single-lane closures on I-94, with local roads closed and traffic detoured. Starting May 9, there will be nighttime single-lane closures on I-94 between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. for shoulder upgrades in preparation of the bridge work, which is expected to start after the Memorial Day holiday. Fourth seeded Spring Arbor Softball headed to Crossroads League Tournament

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The 2016 Crossroads League Softball Tournament is set to begin Thursday, May 5. The eight-team event will be hosted by top-seeded Marian University (39-8, 31-4 CL) May 5-7. No. 3 seed Indiana Wesleyan University (38-14, 26-10 CL) will also host games on the opening day of the double elimination tournament.   Following one its best regular season performances in recent years, the Spring Arbor University softball team (32-24, 22-14 CL) is seeded fourth in the tournament and will take on fifth-seeded Grace College (29-25, 20-16 CL) in its opening game at noon on Thursday in Indianapolis. The other pairing at the Marian site will feature the top-seeded Knights and No. 8 seed University of Saint Francis (20-26, 14-20 CL) at 10 a.m., prior to the SAU-Grace tilt. NASCAR returns to MIS on Father’s Day in 2017

Track will host a pair of race weekends in 2016, June 10-12 and Aug. 26-28   BROOKLYN, Mich. — NASCAR is back on Father’s Day at Michigan International Speedway in 2017. NASCAR released its 2017 schedule for all series Thursday, and NASCAR’s fastest track will once again host two action-filled weekends of NASCAR racing in 2017: June 16-18 and Aug. 11-13. The first of the track’s two traditional NASCAR weekends is June 16-18 with the Corrigan Oil 200 ARCA Racing Series on June 16; NASCAR XFINITY Series Menards 250 presented by Valvoline on June 17; and the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series FireKeepers Casino 400 is on Father’s Day on June 18. The Sprint Cup Series will wind up its summertime stint at MIS, and be back again on August 13 with the Pure Michigan 400. The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Careers for Veterans 200 presented by The Cooper Standard Foundation & Brad Keselowski’s Checkered Flag Foundation is on August 12. NASCAR announced five-year agreements with the tracks following the 2015 season.
